Are Supras V6 or V8?

The Toyota Supra sports car is available with either a turbocharged inline-six or a twin-turbocharged V6 engine, but not a V8. The Supra's standard engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that produces up to 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. There is no V8 option for the current generation Supra.

Supra Engine Options Explained

The Toyota Supra has been offered with a variety of engine configurations over its production history, but the current fifth-generation model introduced in 2019 is only available with a turbocharged inline-six engine. The Supra's standard powertrain is a 3.0-liter turbocharged B58 inline-six engine that produces 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual gearbox.

There is no V8 engine option for the current Supra. Toyota has not offered a V8-powered Supra since the previous fourth-generation model that was discontinued in 2002. The Supra was originally introduced in 1978 as a larger, more powerful version of the Toyota Celica, and early models were powered by inline-six engines.

Why No V8 for the New Supra?

The decision to not offer a V8 engine in the latest Supra was likely driven by several factors:

  • Performance and efficiency: The turbocharged inline-six engine provides excellent performance and fuel efficiency compared to a larger V8.

  • Packaging and weight: Fitting a V8 engine in the Supra's chassis would have been more challenging and likely increased the vehicle's weight.

  • Cost and complexity: A V8 option would have added significant cost and complexity to the Supra's development and production.

  • Market positioning: Toyota wanted to position the Supra as a more affordable, nimble sports car rather than a larger, more powerful muscle car.

Overall, the turbocharged inline-six engine provides the Supra with a compelling balance of performance, efficiency, and driving dynamics that aligns with the vehicle's design and target market.
