Do Fords need premium gas?

The short answer is that most Ford vehicles do not require premium gasoline, and can run perfectly well on regular unleaded fuel. However, there are some exceptions where Ford recommends using premium gas for optimal performance and fuel efficiency.

Understanding Ford's Fuel Recommendations

Ford's fuel recommendations are based on the engine design and performance characteristics of each vehicle model. The majority of Ford's lineup, including popular models like the F-150, Escape, and Fusion, are designed to run on regular 87 octane gasoline. This is the most common and cost-effective fuel option for Ford owners.

However, Ford does recommend premium 91 octane or higher fuel for certain high-performance models, such as the Mustang GT, Shelby GT350, and some EcoBoost-equipped vehicles. These engines are designed to take advantage of the higher octane rating to deliver more power and efficiency.

When to Use Premium Fuel in a Ford

Here are the key guidelines on when to use premium gas in a Ford vehicle:

  • High-performance models: Ford recommends premium fuel for models like the Mustang GT, Shelby GT350, and some EcoBoost-equipped vehicles to maximize power and efficiency.

  • Turbocharged engines: Many Ford vehicles with turbocharged engines, such as the EcoBoost line, perform better and are more fuel-efficient with premium gas.

  • Older vehicles: Older Ford models, especially those with high-compression engines, may also benefit from premium fuel to prevent knocking and ensure optimal performance.

For all other Ford models, regular 87 octane gasoline is perfectly suitable and will not harm the engine. Owners should consult their owner's manual or the fuel information label inside the fuel door to determine the recommended fuel type for their specific Ford vehicle.
