Does Chevy Bolt come in AWD?

No, the Chevy Bolt electric vehicle (EV) does not currently come in an all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration. The Bolt is only available with a single-motor, front-wheel drive powertrain.

Chevy Bolt Overview

The Chevy Bolt is a compact all-electric hatchback that was first introduced in 2016. It is one of the most affordable long-range EVs on the market, with an EPA-estimated range of up to 259 miles on a single charge. The Bolt is powered by a single electric motor that drives the front wheels, producing 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque.

Why Doesn't the Chevy Bolt Come in AWD?

There are a few key reasons why Chevrolet has not offered an AWD version of the Bolt:

  • Cost and Complexity: Adding a second electric motor to power the rear wheels would significantly increase the Bolt's manufacturing cost and complexity, which could price it out of its target market.

  • Weight and Range Impact: An AWD system would add weight to the Bolt, reducing its overall efficiency and range per charge.

  • Lack of Demand: Most Bolt buyers prioritize affordability and range over all-weather capability, so there may not be enough demand to justify the added cost and complexity of an AWD model.

Chevrolet has focused on maximizing the Bolt's value proposition as an affordable long-range EV, rather than adding more expensive and complex features like AWD.

Future AWD Chevy Bolt Possibilities

While the current Chevy Bolt is only available with front-wheel drive, it's possible that Chevrolet could introduce an AWD version in the future. As battery and electric motor technology continues to improve, the cost and weight penalties of adding a second motor may become less prohibitive. However, Chevrolet has not announced any plans for an AWD Bolt at this time.
