Does Ford require special coolant?

Yes, Ford vehicles do require the use of specific coolant formulations. Ford recommends the use of its proprietary Ford-approved coolants to maintain the proper functioning and longevity of the cooling system in its vehicles.

Ford Coolant Requirements

Ford engines are designed to work with specific coolant formulations that meet the automaker's strict specifications. These coolants are engineered to provide optimal protection against corrosion, cavitation, and other issues that can arise in the cooling system. Using the wrong type of coolant can lead to problems such as reduced heat transfer, accelerated component wear, and even engine damage.

The key coolant requirements for Ford vehicles include:

  • Ford-approved coolant: Ford recommends the use of its own branded coolant, which is available in both conventional and extended-life formulations. These coolants are specifically designed to meet Ford's engineering standards.

  • Coolant concentration: Ford specifies a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water for optimal performance and protection.

  • Coolant change intervals: Ford's recommended coolant change intervals vary by model, but generally range from 30,000 to 150,000 miles, depending on the coolant type used.

It's important to follow Ford's coolant recommendations to ensure the proper functioning and longevity of your vehicle's cooling system.

Consequences of Using Non-Ford Coolant

Using a coolant that does not meet Ford's specifications can lead to a variety of problems, including:

  • Corrosion and scale buildup: Non-approved coolants may not provide adequate corrosion protection, leading to the formation of rust and scale in the cooling system.

  • Reduced heat transfer: Incompatible coolants may not have the same heat transfer properties as Ford-approved fluids, reducing the cooling system's efficiency.

  • Accelerated component wear: Coolants that do not meet Ford's specifications may not provide the necessary lubrication and protection for water pumps, hoses, and other cooling system components, leading to premature failure.

  • Engine damage: In severe cases, the use of non-approved coolants can result in engine overheating and even catastrophic engine failure.

To avoid these issues and maintain the warranty coverage on your Ford vehicle, it's essential to use only Ford-approved coolants as specified in your owner's manual.

What color is Ford coolant?

yellow
The Motorcraft branded coolant specified in my manual is also yellow.

What happens if I use universal coolant?

If you settle for a universal coolant over a custom formula, your engine might not up and quit on you immediately, but 6-12 months down the road, you may have issues if your coolant isn't performing properly.

What coolant should I use for my Ford?

Ford recommends their ``Ford Gold'' coolant which is a yellow color HOAT type fluid containing a small amount of silicates, many people use it including at least one of the Techs here at FTE with no issues. I believe it has a very small amount of silicates, something like a tablespoon or less in a gallon.

Is it OK to use Dexcool in a Ford?

Designed to work with all GM ® vehicles 1995 & newer (GM ®-approved), most Ford ® vehicles 2011-2018 and most Chrysler ® vehicles 2013 & newer.

Can I use Prestone coolant in Ford?

Yes. Prestone is an OAT coolant/antifreeze but also contains anti-corrosion ingredients to protect your cooling system. It can be used in all cars effectively, offering the same levels of protection, and without any damage. We offer a guarantee that Prestone is suitable for all cars and engine materials.

Does Ford use a special coolant?

Ford Engineers for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury Vehicles
Motorcraft® antifreeze/coolants meet specific Ford Motor Company engineering standards. They have been subjected to extensive in-vehicle testing in the applications for which they have been approved.

What is the difference between Ford Green and Orange coolant?

Green coolants contain inorganic additive technology (IAT), which is mixed with silicone, phosphate, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol. While orange coolants or Dexcool include organic Acid Technologies (OAT), which contain carboxylates to reduce corrosion and work best with metals.

What is Ford Orange coolant?

Recommended by Ford Motor Company meeting warranty requirements. Orange-colored, longer-life, ethylene glycol-based antifreeze/coolant for use in gasoline and diesel engines, and electric motors. Provides year-round antifreeze, anti-boil and corrosion protection. Ready-to-use.

Can I use Ford yellow coolant instead of orange?

Longtime MOTOR readers know that the color of the coolant dye really is meaningless. Dye should help you spot a leak, but that's about it.

Can you use universal coolant in a Ford?

The "universal" coolants may not be compatible with Ford's recommended supplemental coolant additive, Motorcraft® Diesel Cooling System Additive, VC-8, specified for use in diesel engine-equipped vehicles factory- filled with either Motorcraft® Premium Antifreeze/Coolant (ESE-M97B44-A) or Motorcraft® Gold Antifreeze/ ...
