Does the Ford Maverick come with a standard transmission?

The Ford Maverick does not offer a traditional manual transmission. No Maverick trims come with a stick shift; instead, every Maverick uses an automatic transmission: hybrids use an electronic CVT, and EcoBoost gas models use an 8-speed automatic.

Here’s a detailed look at the Maverick’s transmission options, how they pair with the engines, and what that means for drivers who want a simple, modern drive vs. a more engaging shifting experience.

Transmission options by powertrain

Ford divides the Maverick’s transmissions by engine: one for the hybrid and one for the EcoBoost gas engine. The list below summarizes which transmission you’ll find with each powertrain.

  • Hybrid powertrain: 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid paired with an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT).

  • Gasoline EcoBoost powertrain: 2.0-liter turbocharged engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive is available on EcoBoost models; hybrid models are typically front-wheel-drive.

In short, there is no manual gearbox option on the Maverick. The combination of an eCVT in hybrids and an 8-speed automatic on EcoBoost models provides a modern, efficient driving experience without a manual transmission.

How the transmissions influence driving feel

The eCVT in the Hybrid is designed to maximize fuel efficiency, delivering smooth, seamless shifts that mimic gears without requiring driver input to change them. The 8-speed automatic in EcoBoost models offers more traditional gear changes and can be paired with all-wheel drive for enhanced traction, but it does not include a manual mode.

What this means for buyers

For buyers hoping for a manual transmission for a more engaging driving experience, the Maverick won’t satisfy that preference. For those prioritizing easy operation, steady fuel economy, and modern automatic performance, the Maverick’s transmission lineup aligns with its economy-focused mission.

Summary

The Ford Maverick does not come with a standard manual transmission. Two main powertrains—hybrid and EcoBoost—use automatic transmissions: a hybrid with an eCVT and a gas EcoBoost with an 8-speed automatic. AWD is available with the EcoBoost, while Hybrid remains generally front-wheel drive. This remains true for the current model year and ongoing lineup.

What are the disadvantages of the Ford Maverick?

The main cons of the Ford Maverick include limited towing capacity (especially the hybrid model), potential build quality and reliability issues like inconsistent panel gaps, rattles, and recalls, and a basic and noisy interior with uncomfortable seats for some drivers. Owners also report problems with the electronics, such as a slow infotainment system, lagging backup camera, and various software glitches, as well as a stiff ride and high wind noise at highway speeds.

Performance and capability

  • Low towing capacity: The hybrid model is limited to 2,000 lbs of towing, while the 4,000 lb capacity of the EcoBoost engine (with the 4K tow package) is still less than some competitors like the Hyundai Santa Cruz.
  • Stiff ride and noise: The suspension can be stiff, and there is significant wind and road noise at highway speeds, making long trips uncomfortable for some.
  • Rear seat space: The rear seats are tight for adults.

Build quality and reliability
  • Build quality concerns: Some owners report inconsistent panel gaps, rattling trim, and a general "cheap" feel to the interior materials.
  • Recalls and electrical issues: There have been multiple recalls for various issues, and owners have experienced electrical problems like malfunctioning infotainment systems, low 12v batteries, and persistent warning lights.

Comfort and features
  • Uncomfortable seats: The front seats are often cited as being uncomfortable for long trips due to a lack of cushioning.
  • Basic interior: While the interior is functional, it is made of hard plastics, and some features like a base model sound system can be disappointing.
  • Feature limitations: Some desired features, like heated seats or a better sound system, are only available on higher trim levels.
  • Poor visibility: The large windshield and rear window angle can create blind spots at intersections for some drivers.

Is the Ford Maverick available with a manual transmission?

Unfortunately, not an available option. Personally I would love to have a floor mounted stick shift, or even a column mounted "three on the tree" though that is a bit too old school perhaps. Any how, it got me curious..... if available, would you get a manual tranny if available in the Maverick.

What transmission does the Ford Maverick have?

The Ford Maverick has different transmissions depending on the engine: the 2.5L hybrid uses an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT), while the 2.0L EcoBoost gas engine is paired with either an eight-speed automatic or, on the top-level trim, a seven-speed automatic. The eCVT is designed for fuel efficiency, whereas the automatic transmissions provide a more traditional shifting experience.

  • 2.5L Hybrid Engine: Uses an eCVT for maximum efficiency. For the 2025 model year, this includes a new HF55 PowerSplit eCVT.
  • 2.0L EcoBoost Engine:
    • Standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
    • Some models, like the "Lobo," may come with a seven-speed automatic, sometimes referred to as a seven-speed quick shift transmission, which can be operated with steering wheel paddle shifters.

When did Ford stop making manual transmission trucks?

Ford stopped making manual transmission trucks in the U.S. for its F-150 with the 2008 model year, while the Super Duty series stopped after the 2010 model year. The last manual transmission trucks to be produced by Ford for North America were heavy-duty models that were available in Mexico until 2019.

  • F-150: The last F-150 with a manual transmission was the 2008 model year.
  • Super Duty: Ford discontinued the manual transmission in its Super Duty F-250 and F-350 trucks after the 2010 model year.
  • Other Markets: While manual transmissions were phased out in the U.S. by 2011, Ford continued to produce them in other countries, with the last heavy-duty trucks with manual transmissions being made in Mexico until 2019.
