How do I reset my Subaru tailgate?

The quickest way to reset a Subaru tailgate is usually a light power-cycle and, if applicable, a height-memory calibration. Exact steps depend on your model and year, so check your owner’s manual or Subaru support for model-specific instructions.

Quick checks and soft reset

If the tailgate is acting up, start with these basic diagnostics and a gentle reset to clear minor glitches.

  1. Ensure the tailgate and latch area are free of dirt, debris, and obstructions. Confirm the tailgate is fully closed and securely latched.

  2. Cycle the vehicle’s electrical system: turn off the engine, remove the key or key fob, wait about 60 seconds, then restart. This can reset the tailgate’s control module.

  3. If your model supports a height memory, set the desired tailgate height manually by moving it to the preferred position, then save the height using the appropriate button or sequence described in the manual. If your model doesn’t have a memory height feature, skip this step.

  4. Check the fuse(s) for the tailgate’s power circuit and replace any blown fuse following the vehicle’s manual guidelines.

If these quick checks don’t resolve the issue, proceed to the calibration and memory-height steps described below.

Calibration and memory-height reset

For tailgates that open or close but don’t stop at the correct height or that don’t remember a saved height, a calibration of the height memory and a power-cycle may be required.

  1. With the tailgate closed, activate the tailgate to fully open using the power switch or key fob, ensuring it completes the full travel. Close it again to reset the travel cycle.

  2. If your model supports height memory, manually move the tailgate to the desired stopping height, then save this height by following the manual’s procedure (often by pressing and holding the tailgate close button or interior switch until a confirmation beep or indicator occurs).

  3. Close the tailgate to the fully closed position, then test by reopening to verify it stops at the stored height. Repeat if needed.

  4. If the memory still doesn’t save or the tailgate behaves strangely, perform a battery reset: disconnect the negative battery terminal for about 10 minutes, reconnect, and retry the calibration sequence.

Note that not all models require a battery reset, and the exact button sequences to save height can vary by model. Always consult your owner’s manual for model-specific instructions.

Model-specific notes

Forester and Outback (power tailgate)

Most Forester and Outback models with a factory power tailgate follow the standard calibration steps described above. Ensure the vehicle battery is healthy, the latch and hinges are in good condition, and that there are no interference issues from cargo in the cargo area. If problems persist after reset, there may be a fault in the tailgate motor, sensor, or related wiring that warrants professional diagnosis.

Crosstrek and Impreza (power tailgate)

Calibration steps are generally similar, but some trims may omit a dedicated height-memory button. If you can’t locate the exact procedure in your manual, rely on the core steps: complete a full open/close cycle, set height manually if available, and perform a battery reset if needed. For persistent issues, seek guidance from a Subaru technician.

When to seek service

If the tailgate remains unresponsive, opens or closes inconsistently, or displays error messages after performing resets, contact a Subaru dealer or qualified technician. Electrical faults, faulty sensors, a worn latch, or a damaged tailgate motor can require professional inspection and possible replacement.

Summary

Resetting a Subaru tailgate typically involves a combination of a power-cycle, fuse checks, and, where supported, a height-memory calibration. Since steps vary by model and year, rely on your owner’s manual or Subaru support for model-specific instructions. With proper procedure, most tailgate issues are resolved without extensive repairs.

How do I reset my hatch?

To reset your Hatch device, you'll need to perform a specific button combination based on the model. For devices like the Restore 2 and 3, unplug it, press and hold the connect button on the bottom, and then plug it back in while still holding the button for 10 seconds before releasing it. For other models, like Rest+ 2nd Gen, you may need to press and hold both the power and connect buttons for 10 seconds, then release the power button but continue holding the connect button.

Hatch Restore 2 and 3

  1. Unplug: your device from the power source.
  2. Press and hold: the connect button (it has two arrows on it) on the bottom of the device.
  3. While still holding the button, plug the power cord back in.
  4. Release the button: after about 10 seconds.
  5. Wait about two minutes for the device to reboot, then try to connect again with the Hatch Sleep app.

Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen
  1. Make sure: your Rest+ 2nd gen is plugged in and has been charged for at least 5 hours.
  2. Press and hold both: the power button (center button) and the connect button (circular button with two arrows) for 10 seconds.
  3. Release the power button, but continue to hold the connect button for another 10 seconds.
  4. Release the connect button .
  5. Open the app and connect to your device, accepting any firmware updates if prompted.

Hatch Rest (2nd Gen)
  1. Unplug: the Rest from power for at least 5 minutes.
  2. Restart: your phone.
  3. Plug the Rest back in, preferably into a different outlet.
  4. Press and hold the connect button: on the bottom of the device for 10 seconds.
  5. Wait about 5 minutes, then try to connect to the device through the app.

Other troubleshooting
  • Power Cycle: For a simpler reset, force close the Hatch app, unplug your device for about 10 seconds, and then plug it back in.
  • Paperclip Reset (for Rest+): If the above steps don't work, make sure the Rest+ is plugged in, then insert a paperclip into the small hole marked "R" to the left of the power cord for one minute. Open the app to reconnect and accept any updates.
  • Factory reset (for computers): If your "Hatch" refers to a Hatch computer, the reset process is different and involves booting into a recovery environment.

How do you reset the liftgate on a Subaru?

To reset the tailgate: press and HOLD the tailgate button until the gate pops open. Manually lift the tailgate all the way to the top then press the button to close. To reset the automatic windows (passenger side doesn't open with driver switch): press and hold that windows switch until the window is all the way down.

Why is my Subaru trunk not opening all the way?

Your Subaru's trunk may not be opening all the way due to a mis-activated memory height setting (which can be reset by pressing the "memory" button on the driver's dash) or a problem with the liftgate's physical components, such as a misaligned latch or a failing motor. Less common causes include a faulty key fob, electrical issues, or a software glitch.
Common solutions for power liftgates

  • Disable the memory height: A "memory" button on the driver's side dashboard (often near the steering wheel) can be accidentally pressed, setting the trunk to open at a lower height. Press this button once to turn the feature off. The button may have a small white line; this line will be visible when the feature is off.
  • Reset the liftgate memory: If the liftgate is manually adjusted to a new height, you may need to reset its memory.
    1. Open the liftgate and manually move it to the desired height.
    2. Press and hold the close button on the liftgate until you hear a beep to save the new height.
  • Check the touchscreen (for newer models): Some newer models with a large touchscreen have this setting in the "Settings" menu instead of a physical button.

Other possible solutions and troubleshooting steps

  • Inspect the latch and striker: The trunk may be obstructed or the latch and striker may be out of alignment. Check for any physical obstructions in the trunk and have a mechanic adjust the components if necessary.
  • Address key fob issues: If the key fob is the problem, try replacing the battery first. If that doesn't work, the fob may need to be reprogrammed.
  • Check the liftgate motor and wiring: A faulty liftgate motor or loose/frayed wiring can prevent the trunk from opening fully. If the issue persists, a technician can inspect the electrical components for problems.
  • Reset the system: Some problems can be resolved by disconnecting the car's battery for a short period, or by trying a manual reset procedure by holding the close button on the liftgate for a few seconds.

How to fix a power tailgate problem?

When the rear power tailgate is stuck halfway, first check the tailgate motor and latch assembly for obstructions or damage. Inspect the wiring harness and fuses related to the tailgate system. A manual override can be performed by disconnecting the battery, then gently moving the tailgate to a closed position.
