How to change a license plate light?

Changing a license plate light is a relatively simple task that can be done with basic tools. Whether your license plate light has burned out or you want to upgrade to a brighter LED bulb, this guide will walk you through the steps to get the job done.

Gather the Necessary Supplies

  • Replacement license plate light bulb (check your vehicle's owner's manual for the correct size)

  • Screwdriver (flathead or Phillips head, depending on your vehicle)

  • Gloves (optional, to avoid touching the new bulb with your bare hands)

Before you begin, make sure you have the right replacement bulb for your vehicle. Consult your owner's manual or do a quick online search to find the correct size and type of bulb.

Access the License Plate Light

The location of the license plate light will vary depending on your vehicle, but it is typically located on the rear of the car, near the license plate. You may need to remove a small cover or panel to access the light.

  • Locate the license plate light housing, which is usually secured with one or more screws.

  • Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove the screws and carefully pull the housing away from the vehicle.

Be gentle when removing the housing to avoid damaging any surrounding components.

Replace the Bulb

  • Gently pull the old bulb out of the socket, taking care not to touch the glass with your bare hands.

  • Insert the new bulb into the socket, making sure it is securely in place.

  • If you are using gloves, you can remove them now.

Double-check that the new bulb is properly installed and functioning before reassembling the license plate light housing.

Reinstall the License Plate Light

  • Carefully place the license plate light housing back into its original position.

  • Secure the housing with the screws you removed earlier, taking care not to overtighten them.

  • Test the new bulb to ensure it is working properly.

And that's it! You've successfully changed your license plate light. Remember to dispose of the old bulb properly and enjoy your newly illuminated license plate.
