Is Honda bringing the Prelude back?

No, Honda is not currently planning to bring back the iconic Prelude sports coupe. The Prelude was discontinued in 2001 after a successful 22-year production run, and Honda has not announced any plans to revive the model.

The History of the Honda Prelude

The Honda Prelude was first introduced in 1978 as a compact, front-wheel-drive sports coupe. Over its five generations, the Prelude gained a reputation for its sporty handling, powerful engines, and sleek, aerodynamic design. The Prelude was positioned as a more affordable alternative to sports cars like the Acura NSX, and it competed with other compact coupes like the Toyota Celica and Nissan 240SX.

The Prelude was discontinued in 2001 as consumer preferences shifted towards SUVs and crossovers. Honda decided to focus its resources on developing new models to meet the changing market demands, rather than investing in a niche sports coupe like the Prelude.

Why the Prelude Hasn't Returned

  • Declining Demand for Sports Coupes: The market for compact sports coupes has shrunk significantly in recent decades, as consumers have gravitated towards larger, more practical vehicles like SUVs and crossovers.

  • Shifting Priorities at Honda: Honda has been focused on developing new models and technologies to meet evolving consumer preferences, rather than reviving older nameplates like the Prelude.

  • Overlap with Existing Models: The Honda Civic Coupe and Honda Accord Coupe already occupy a similar market space to the Prelude, making it less of a priority for Honda to bring back the Prelude.

While the Prelude has a loyal following among enthusiasts, the current market conditions and Honda's product priorities make it unlikely that the Prelude will be revived in the near future. However, the possibility of a Prelude comeback in the future cannot be entirely ruled out, as automakers sometimes revive iconic nameplates when the market conditions are right.
