Is the Honda Civic Type R manual or automatic?

The Honda Civic Type R is manual-only, employing a six-speed gearbox; there is no automatic variant offered anywhere in production as of 2025.

What this means for the car's identity

The Type R is built around driver involvement: a precise six-speed manual, rev-matching for downshifts, a high-revving turbo engine, and a mechanical limited-slip differential. This configuration prioritizes a tactile connection between driver and machine over automated convenience.

Core transmission characteristics

Here are the key transmission features that define the Type R's driving experience:

  • Six-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shift action

  • Rev-matching downshifts to smooth gear changes

  • No automatic or dual-clutch option in current production

  • Mechanical limited-slip differential for improved grip

  • Chassis and drivetrain tuning oriented toward engaging, hands-on driving

Taken together, these elements reinforce Honda's commitment to a pure, driver-centric performance experience in the Civic Type R.

Market stance and official communications

Honda has consistently framed the Type R lineup as manual-only across regions, from North America to Europe and Asia-Pacific. The company has not announced any plans to introduce an automatic version for the Type R and emphasizes the car's role as the brand's most hands-on performance model.

Implications for buyers and driving experience

For buyers who prefer automatics, the Type R’s configuration means opting for a different Civic variant (such as the Si or EX) or exploring other brands’ hot hatch offerings. Conversely, enthusiasts seeking maximum driver involvement will likely value the six-speed manual's direct feel, precise engagement, and the rev-matching system that aids downshifts.

Summary

Bottom line: The Honda Civic Type R remains manual-only. There is no automatic or dual-clutch option in production as of 2025, preserving a pure, driver-centric experience that has become a hallmark of the Type R lineage.

Why is Type R so expensive?

The Honda Civic Type R is expensive due to its high-performance components, limited production, and brand cachet, which combine to create a premium price tag. Key factors include a powerful turbocharged engine, a track-tuned suspension, high-end parts like Brembo brakes and a limited-slip differential, and the high demand for a car with such a strong performance reputation.
Performance and engineering

  • Powerful engine: A 2.0-liter turbocharged engine provides over 300 horsepower.
  • Track-tuned components: The car features a performance-focused suspension, upgraded brakes, and a limited-slip differential to enhance handling and control.
  • Engineering for performance: Special features, like those designed to eliminate torque steer, contribute to a high-performance driving experience that commands a premium.

Production and exclusivity
  • Limited production: The Type R is produced in limited numbers, which increases its exclusivity and price.
  • High demand: The strong market demand and reputation of the Type R badge mean many consumers are willing to pay a premium for it.
  • Import duties: In some markets, being an imported model can add significant costs due to import duties and taxes.

Brand and value
  • Brand cachet: The "Type R" nameplate has a strong legacy as Honda's high-performance badge, giving the car significant brand value.
  • Collector's value: The combination of its performance and limited availability gives it collector's value, which influences its market price.

Is a Honda Type R stick shift?

Is the Civic Type R a daily driver?

But it has tons of grip and speed, and it looks awesome. I have a type r with 120k it's my daily.....it's a civic with an accord engine and a 6 speed. Doesn't get too much more reliable than that. It's a great daily, as long as you're not coming from a luxury car and expecting that level of comfort it's perfect.
