What are signs of bad ignition coils?

Ignition coils are an essential component of a vehicle's ignition system, responsible for providing the high-voltage spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the engine's cylinders. When ignition coils fail, it can lead to a range of performance issues and even engine damage. Here are some common signs that your vehicle's ignition coils may be going bad.

Misfiring Engine

One of the most obvious signs of a bad ignition coil is a misfiring engine. When an ignition coil fails, it can cause the spark plug it's connected to to misfire, resulting in a rough-running engine, hesitation, or even stalling. This is often the first symptom of a problem with the ignition coils.

Decreased Fuel Efficiency

A malfunctioning ignition coil can also lead to decreased fuel efficiency. When a coil fails, the engine may not be able to fully combust the air-fuel mixture, leading to unburnt fuel being expelled through the exhaust. This can result in a noticeable drop in your vehicle's miles per gallon.

Check Engine Light Illumination

Most modern vehicles have an on-board diagnostic system that monitors the various components of the engine, including the ignition coils. If the system detects a problem with one or more of the coils, it will trigger the check engine light on the dashboard. This is a clear indication that you should have your vehicle inspected for potential ignition coil issues.

Difficulty Starting the Engine

A bad ignition coil can also make it difficult to start your vehicle. If the coil is not providing a strong enough spark, the engine may struggle to start, or it may take several attempts before it finally fires up. This is another common symptom of ignition coil failure.

Increased Engine Vibrations

When an ignition coil fails, it can cause uneven combustion in the affected cylinder, leading to increased engine vibrations. You may notice your vehicle shaking or vibrating more than usual, especially at idle or under load.

If you notice any of these signs, it's important to have your vehicle's ignition system inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your engine.
