What are the different types of 351 Fords?

The Ford 351 engine is a popular and versatile V8 engine that was produced by the Ford Motor Company from the late 1960s through the early 1990s. There are several different variants of the 351 Ford engine, each with its own unique characteristics and applications.

The 351 Windsor

The 351 Windsor was the most common and widely-used version of the 351 Ford engine. It was produced from 1969 to 1995 and was known for its excellent performance and reliability. The 351 Windsor was available in a variety of configurations, including the 2-barrel, 4-barrel, and high-performance Boss versions. The 351 Windsor was used in a wide range of Ford vehicles, including the Mustang, Thunderbird, and F-Series trucks.

The 351 Cleveland

The 351 Cleveland was a higher-performance version of the 351 Ford engine that was produced from 1970 to 1974. The 351 Cleveland featured a larger bore and shorter stroke than the 351 Windsor, which gave it a higher compression ratio and more horsepower. The 351 Cleveland was primarily used in high-performance Ford models, such as the Mustang and Torino.

The 351M and 400M

  • The 351M and 400M were larger-displacement versions of the 351 Ford engine that were produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

  • The 351M had a displacement of 351 cubic inches, while the 400M had a displacement of 400 cubic inches.

  • These engines were designed to provide more torque and low-end power, making them well-suited for use in larger Ford vehicles such as the LTD and Thunderbird.

The 351M and 400M were not as popular or well-regarded as the 351 Windsor and 351 Cleveland, and they were eventually phased out in favor of other engine designs.

The 351 Hybrid

The 351 Hybrid was a unique version of the 351 Ford engine that was produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The 351 Hybrid combined the block and crankshaft of the 351M with the cylinder heads and other components of the 351 Windsor, creating a hybrid engine that offered a balance of power and efficiency. The 351 Hybrid was primarily used in Ford's larger vehicles, such as the LTD and Thunderbird.
