What is the difference between an AGM battery and a regular battery?

The main difference between an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery and a regular battery lies in their construction and performance characteristics. AGM batteries are a type of lead-acid battery that offer several advantages over traditional flooded lead-acid batteries.

Construction and Design

Regular lead-acid batteries have a liquid electrolyte solution that surrounds the battery plates. In contrast, AGM batteries use a fiberglass mat that is saturated with the electrolyte solution. This design allows the electrolyte to be suspended in the mat, preventing it from spilling or leaking. AGM batteries are also sealed, making them spill-proof and maintenance-free.

Charging and Discharging

AGM batteries can be charged and discharged more rapidly than regular batteries. They also have a higher tolerance for deep discharges, which can extend their overall lifespan. Regular batteries, on the other hand, are more sensitive to deep discharges and may suffer from reduced capacity or even permanent damage if discharged too low.

Performance and Applications

AGM batteries are generally more expensive than regular batteries, but they offer several performance advantages. They have a higher power density, meaning they can deliver more power in a smaller package. AGM batteries also have a lower internal resistance, which allows for faster charging and discharging. These features make AGM batteries well-suited for applications that require high power output, such as:

  • Automotive and marine starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) systems

  • Backup power supplies for telecommunications and computer equipment

  • Renewable energy systems, such as solar and wind power

  • Recreational vehicles, such as RVs and boats

In contrast, regular lead-acid batteries are often used in more basic applications, such as powering household electronics or providing backup power for small devices.

What is the main disadvantage of an AGM battery?

the up-front cost
If there were more than one answer, the question asked would be "What are the main disadvantages of an AGM battery?" The main disadvantage of an AGM battery is the up-front cost, when compared to a traditional flooded lead-acid battery.

How do I know if my battery is AGM or regular?

This is a special type of glass material that acts as a sponge, soaking up any extra water in the battery. You can tell if your product has an AGM by looking for “AGM” on the label, or by using the model number to look it up on the manufacturer's website. If you're not sure where to look, ask us!

Is an AGM battery better than a standard battery?

AGM batteries are built to withstand vibration. If your drives frequently take you over rough, bumpy terrain, an AGM may be a smart choice. High electrical loads. AGMs have a lower internal resistance, which allows for faster charging and higher power outputs.

What kills AGM batteries?

AGM batteries are 12 volts, like all car batteries, and can handle some higher voltage, but only up to a certain point. If a car alternator charges an AGM battery with a voltage higher than 15 volts, it can damage an AGM.

Do AGM batteries need a special charger?

AGM batteries have special charging needs. Some battery chargers offer an AGM or Absorbed setting to meet those special charging requirements. An AGM-compatible battery charger sends more amps into a lead-acid battery while keeping the voltage less than 14-15 volts.

Is it worth switching to an AGM battery?

A battery's internal resistance can affect its performance. The internal resistance of an AGM battery can be as low as 2%. In comparison, a flooded battery can have an internal resistance of 10-15%. The lower internal resistance means an increased battery voltage output while helping AGM car batteries recharge faster.

Can you jump start an AGM battery?

As mentioned above, jump starting AGM batteries is very straightforward. That said, our Booster PAC and Jump-N-Carry traditional jump starters use AGM batteries in them and are legendary for their power and durability. Whether jumping flooded batteries or AGM, they answer the call day after day, year after year.

What are the common problems with AGM batteries?

Common problems of AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries are:

  • Battery not holding charge.
  • Battery cannot be fully charged.
  • The battery cannot maintain its charge.

Is it okay to replace an AGM battery with a regular battery?

Yes you can. AGM batteries withstand higher charging rates and are better for high shock/vibration environments, such as off roading, but a regular lead acid battery will work fine.
