What is the minimum thickness of brake rotors?


Brake rotors are marked with a “minimum thickness” on the casting (usually 2 mm to 3 mm less than the new rotor thickness). Rotors should be replaced before they reach this minimum thickness and should not be “turned” (machine refinished) below this.



What is the minimum brake rotor thickness for a dot?


An air braked commercial motor vehicle shall not be operated with brake lining/pad thickness less than 6.4 mm (1⁄4 inch) or to the wear indicator if the lining is so marked (measured at the shoe center for drum brakes); or less than 3.2 mm (1⁄8 inch) for disc brakes.

If the measurement taken shows values below the MIN TH, then you must replace the rotor.



How much brake rotor wear is acceptable?


This lip is created as the brake pads normally don't contact all of the rotor surface and therefore leaves an outer lip when the rotors are worn down. Keep in mind that rotors reach their wear limit at only about 1mm. If there is an obvious lip, it's most likely near it's wear limit or is wearing unevenly.



What are the measurements for brakes to pass inspection?


DOT requirements place the minimum threshold of drum brakes at ¼” or 8/32”. Disc brakes have a DOT threshold of 1/8” or 4/32”. LGT measures the thickness in 32nds of an inch. The brake drum and rotor assemblies are the parts in which the stopping force is applied to slow down the vehicle.



Where can I find my rotor size?


Call your local OEM dealer and ask for the original rotor sizes or OEM rotor/pads part numbers based on your vehicle's VIN number (VIN# is referenced in your ownership papers). The dealership may not tell you the rotor size, but they will give you the genuine part numbers for your vehicle.
