When did Ford use CVT transmission?

Ford has used continuously variable transmission (CVT) technology in some of its vehicles, though the adoption of CVT has been limited compared to other automakers. The first Ford model to feature a CVT was the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, which used a CVT developed by Aisin.

Ford's History with CVT Transmission

CVT technology has been around for decades, but it has taken time for automakers to fully embrace it. Ford was relatively late to the CVT game compared to some other major manufacturers. The key points about Ford's use of CVT transmission include:

  • The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid was the first Ford model to use a CVT, which was supplied by Aisin.

  • Ford also used a CVT in the 2013-2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid and Energi models.

  • The 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid and Escape Plug-In Hybrid models feature a Ford-designed CVT.

  • Outside of hybrid models, Ford has not widely adopted CVT technology across its mainstream vehicle lineup.

  • Many Ford vehicles continue to use traditional automatic transmissions or dual-clutch transmissions instead of CVTs.

While Ford has experimented with CVT technology, it has not been as aggressive in adopting it compared to some other automakers like Honda, Nissan, and Toyota, which have used CVTs more extensively across their vehicle lineups.

Reasons for Limited CVT Adoption at Ford

There are a few key reasons why Ford has been relatively cautious about using CVT transmissions:

  • Customer Perceptions: Some customers have negative perceptions of CVT technology, associating it with a "rubber band" feel or lack of responsiveness. Ford may have been hesitant to widely adopt CVTs due to these customer concerns.

  • Performance Priorities: Ford has historically prioritized performance and driving dynamics in many of its vehicles. CVTs are sometimes seen as less engaging or fun to drive compared to traditional automatic or manual transmissions.

  • Manufacturing Capabilities: Developing and manufacturing CVT transmissions in-house requires significant engineering and production investments. Ford may have preferred to focus its resources on other transmission technologies.

While Ford has used CVTs in select hybrid models, the company has generally favored other transmission types for its mainstream, non-hybrid vehicles. This reflects Ford's more cautious approach to adopting CVT technology compared to some of its competitors.
