Where is fuel pump fuse located?

The fuel pump fuse is typically located in the vehicle's fuse box, which is usually found in the engine compartment or under the dashboard. The exact location can vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle, so it's important to consult your owner's manual or refer to the fuse box diagram for your specific car.

Understanding the Fuel Pump Fuse

The fuel pump fuse is a critical component in your vehicle's electrical system, as it provides power to the fuel pump. The fuel pump is responsible for delivering fuel from the fuel tank to the engine, and if the fuse is blown, the fuel pump will not receive power and the engine will not start.

Locating the fuel pump fuse is important for troubleshooting issues with your vehicle's fuel system, such as a malfunctioning fuel pump or a problem with the electrical system. If you suspect an issue with your fuel pump, you can check the fuse to see if it has blown and replace it if necessary.

Steps to Locate the Fuel Pump Fuse

  • Consult your owner's manual or the fuse box diagram to determine the location of the fuel pump fuse.

  • Locate the fuse box, which is typically found in the engine compartment or under the dashboard.

  • Open the fuse box cover and identify the fuel pump fuse, which may be labeled or marked with a symbol.

  • Use a fuse puller tool or your fingers to carefully remove the fuse and inspect it for any signs of damage or discoloration.

  • If the fuse is blown, replace it with a new fuse of the same amperage rating.

It's important to note that the location and appearance of the fuel pump fuse may vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle, so it's always best to refer to your owner's manual or the fuse box diagram for specific instructions.

Where is the fuel pump reset button located?

The fuel pump reset button, also known as the inertia switch, is typically located in the passenger side footwell. It is often found behind the kick panel or an access panel to the left of the fuse box. To reset it, turn the ignition off, ensure there are no fuel leaks, and then press the button until it clicks.

How to locate and reset the button

  • Locate the switch: The switch is usually in the passenger's front footwell, behind a panel on the side of the vehicle's interior (the kick panel). Some models may have it located under the right side of the glove box.
  • Identify the switch: Look for a small switch, often with a red button on top.
  • Check for leaks: Before resetting, turn the ignition off and check the fuel system for any leaks.
  • Reset the switch: Push the red button down firmly until it clicks, which indicates it has been reset.
  • Start the car: Turn the ignition on and wait a few seconds to allow the fuel pump to prime, then return the key to the off position. You can then start the car.

How do you know if your fuel pump fuse is blown?

A blown fuel pump fuse typically causes the engine to fail completely, resulting in symptoms like the engine not starting at all (cranking but not starting) or the engine stalling unexpectedly while driving. You may also notice a lack of the normal buzzing sound from the fuel pump when you turn the key, or hear other sounds like sputtering, hesitation, or poor performance.
Symptoms of a blown fuel pump fuse

  • Engine won't start: This is the most common symptom. The engine will crank but not fire up because the fuel pump isn't getting power.
  • Engine stalls: The engine may suddenly cut out while driving, or it could stall while idling.
  • No fuel pump sound: You won't hear the usual faint humming or buzzing sound from the fuel tank area when you turn the key to the "on" position.
  • Hesitation or sputtering: While a blown fuse often causes a complete failure to start, an intermittent or partially failing circuit can cause the engine to hesitate, sputter, or run poorly before failing entirely.
  • Check engine light: A blown fuse can cause the check engine light to illuminate, sometimes with specific codes related to the fuel pump circuit.
  • Sudden loss of power: If the fuse failure is intermittent, you might experience a sudden drop in power before the engine stalls or the fuse blows completely.

What to do
  • Inspect the fuse: The first step is to locate the fuse box and inspect the fuel pump fuse for a broken wire or a blown connection.
  • Check other components: Since a blown fuse can indicate an underlying problem, a mechanic will also check the fuel pump itself, the fuel pump relay, and the wiring for any shorts or other failures.
  • Do not keep replacing the fuse: Simply replacing a blown fuse without addressing the root cause will likely result in the new fuse blowing again immediately, as it indicates an electrical short or an over-taxed component.

How to check if the fuel pump is getting power?

We should be within about a half a volt of battery voltage. And we do. So what this means is that we have enough power and have a good ground. Now we know we need a new fuel. Pump.

How to get a fuel pump to kick on?

Use a rubber mallet or the handle of a wrench to gently tap the bottom of the fuel tank. The vibration can sometimes jolt the fuel pump motor back to life, allowing it to pump fuel to the engine.
