Where is the bank 2 sensor 1 located?

Bank 2 Sensor 1 is the oxygen sensor located upstream of the catalytic converter on the Bank 2 side of the engine. In most V-configured engines, Bank 2 is the opposite side from Bank 1, and Sensor 1 sits before the catalytic converter on that bank.

This article explains what Bank 2 Sensor 1 is, how it’s identified on common engine layouts, and how to locate it safely on your vehicle. It covers different configurations, including V-shaped and inline layouts, and notes where Bank 2 may not exist.

Understanding the terminology

Oxygen sensors monitor exhaust oxygen content to help the engine control module adjust the air-fuel mixture. Bank 1 and Bank 2 refer to opposite sides of a V-shaped or horizontally opposed engine. Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor before the catalytic converter; Sensor 2 is downstream after the catalyst.

Locating Bank 2 Sensor 1 on common engine layouts

Engine layouts vary, so the following guide covers typical configurations and where the Bank 2 Sensor 1 can be found. Note that inline engines usually have only Bank 1, so Bank 2 may not be present on those designs.

  • V-shaped engines (V6, V8, V10, V12): Bank 2 Sensor 1 is the upstream O2 sensor on the exhaust manifold for Bank 2, located near the cylinder head on that bank and before the catalytic converter.

  • Inline engines (I4, I3, etc.): Many inline engines have only Bank 1, so Bank 2 Sensor 1 may not be present. If a Bank 2 exists in a specific model, Sensor 1 would be on the opposite manifold; consult the service manual.

  • Transverse-mounted engines in front-wheel-drive cars: The physical position depends on engine orientation; Bank 2 Sensor 1 is still the upstream sensor on the Bank 2 manifold, first in line before the cat, and might be accessible from the engine bay or underneath.

Always verify with the vehicle’s service manual or a factory diagram, because manufacturer naming and layouts can vary by model and market.

How to identify Bank 2 Sensor 1 on your vehicle

Use these practical checks to confirm the exact location on your model. The following steps assume you are working with the vehicle safely on a lift or with wheels chocked and the engine cool.

  • Check for two upstream O2 sensors near the exhaust manifold: Bank 1 Sensor 1 and Bank 2 Sensor 1. The one closest to the engine on the corresponding bank is Sensor 1.

  • Follow the wiring harness: Bank 2 Sensor 1 wires usually run toward the engine’s opposite side; label or photograph connectors before removal for reinstallation.

  • Consult the repair manual for engine-specific diagrams and torque specs for removing and replacing the sensor.

If you’re unsure, contact a professional technician or refer to the official service bulletin for your vehicle model.

Summary

Bank 2 Sensor 1 is the upstream oxygen sensor on the Bank 2 side of a V-configured or horizontally opposed engine, located before the catalytic converter. On inline engines, Bank 2 may not exist. Always verify with your vehicle’s manual or a trusted diagram, as layouts vary by make and model.
