Where is the reset button on Honda Civic?

There isn’t a single, universal reset button on a Honda Civic. Reset functions are built into the instrument cluster and are accessed through steering-wheel controls or the trip/reset button, with steps that vary by model year. This guide covers the two most common resets: maintenance minder (oil life) and the trip meters, across recent Civics.

Resetting the Maintenance Minder / Oil Life

Maintenance minder and oil-life resets are done from the information display using the vehicle’s controls. The exact steps depend on generation, so below are the typical approaches for current Civics.

10th generation (2016–2021) Civics

Use the information display and the selector knob to reach Oil Life, then reset.

  1. Turn the ignition to ON (position II) without starting the engine.

  2. Use the steering-wheel controls to navigate to Oil Life or Maintenance Minder on the information display.

  3. Press and hold the SELECT/RESET knob until the oil life resets to 100% (or the display indicates reset).

  4. Turn the ignition OFF, then start the engine to confirm the reset.

After you complete the steps, the oil life should show as 100% and the maintenance minder indicator should reset. If it doesn’t reset on the first try, repeat the steps or consult the owner’s manual for your trim level.

11th generation (2022–present) Civics

The reset process is usually similar, but the menu layout uses the newer multi-information display and steering-wheel controls.

  1. Turn the ignition to ON (do not start the engine).

  2. Navigate to Maintenance or Oil Life on the information display using the steering-wheel buttons.

  3. Select Oil Life and press and hold the reset/SEL control until the display resets to 100% or indicates a reset.

  4. Turn the ignition OFF, then start the engine to verify the reset.

If your model uses a different label (for example, “Maintenance Minder” or similar), follow the on-screen prompts to reach the same Oil Life reset option. If the light remains after repeated attempts, check the manual or contact a dealer.

Resetting the Trip Meter

Trip meters (Trip A and Trip B) track distance and sometimes fuel economy. Resetting them clears the current trip data but does not affect maintenance reminders.

General procedure for Trip A / Trip B

Use the trip control on the instrument cluster or steering wheel to display the desired trip, then reset.

  1. Turn the ignition to ON (without starting the engine).

  2. Cycle the display to Trip A or Trip B using the trip/RESET button or stalk control.

  3. Press and hold the reset control (the same button or knob used to cycle the trip) until the reading returns to zero.

  4. Release the control and verify the trip is reset to 0.0 (or 0.0 miles/km).

Note: Some older Civics use a dedicated small button near the odometer; others use the end-of-turn-signal stalk or a control on the steering wheel. If in doubt, consult the owner’s manual for your exact year and trim.

Where to find these controls by generation

Control placement has shifted with generations, so here’s a quick orientation by era.

8th–9th generations (roughly 2006–2015)

Trip reset is typically a small button on or near the instrument cluster; press or press-and-hold to reset Trip A/B. Oil-life resets are usually done via the ODO/Trip selector on the cluster panel.

10th generation (2016–2021)

Reset controls are primarily through the information display and the steering-wheel selector knob. Use these controls to reach Oil Life and perform the reset as described above.

11th generation (2022–present)

Similar to the 10th generation, with updated menus in the multi-information display. Navigate to Maintenance or Oil Life and reset using the same selector/press-and-hold method.

Summary

There is no single “reset button” on a Honda Civic. Resetting maintenance reminders and trip data relies on the instrument cluster and steering-wheel controls, and the exact steps vary by generation. For maintenance minder (oil life), access the Oil Life or Maintenance Minder option in the information display and reset it by holding the reset/SEL control. For trips, select Trip A or Trip B and reset with the same control. If you run into trouble, consult the owner’s manual for your specific year and trim, or contact a Honda service center.
