Are Jaguar engines made by Ford?

No. Today, Jaguar engines are not made by Ford. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which is part of Tata Motors, designs and builds its own engines, including the Ingenium family. Ford’s direct involvement with Jaguar ended when Tata acquired JLR in 2008. During Ford’s ownership (1990–2008), Ford did provide engineering support and influence on Jaguar’s engine programs, but that era is now in the past.

Historical relationship between Jaguar and Ford

The period when Ford owned Jaguar lasted nearly two decades and shaped the brand’s powertrain direction in several ways. The collaboration included Jaguar’s use of Ford-derived engineering concepts and engine families, most notably the AJ-V8 family that powered several Jaguar models at the time. The arrangement benefited from Ford’s global manufacturing scale and engineering resources, even as Jaguar retained its distinct design language and brand identity.

The following summary captures key points from that era:

  • 1990–2008: Ford owned Jaguar and provided engineering support that influenced Jaguar’s engine development, including the adoption and evolution of the AJ‑V8 V8 family used in multiple models.

  • Engine collaboration: Jaguar’s powertrain lineup during this period benefited from Ford’s expertise and shared engineering practices, though Jaguar maintained control over branding and model development.

  • End of the era: In 2008, Tata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover, ending Ford’s direct involvement in Jaguar’s engine program and allowing JLR to pursue its own engine strategy.

These points illustrate that Ford played a significant role in Jaguar’s engines in the past, but that collaboration ended with Tata’s purchase of JLR. The current engine program operates independently of Ford.

Jaguar Land Rover’s current engine program

Today’s Jaguar engines come from Jaguar Land Rover’s own engineering and manufacturing efforts, with the Ingenium family at the core. The brand also pursues electrification alongside traditional internal-combustion powertrains.

The main elements of the current engine program are summarized below:

  • Ingenium 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines, used across several Jaguar models (and in related Land Rover applications), with mild-hybrid variants offered in some markets.

  • Ingenium 3.0-liter V6 petrol engines (often turbocharged in various configurations) that power larger Jaguars and are used across the Jaguar Land Rover lineup as needed.

  • Ingenium 5.0-liter V8 petrol engines (with supercharged variants) used in high-performance Jaguar models such as the F-Type and other performance-oriented editions.

  • Electrified powertrains and model range: Jaguar’s lineup includes electric and hybrid options (notably the I-Pace for pure electric propulsion), alongside electrified variants of the Ingenium engines.

  • Independent development and production: These engines are designed and produced within Jaguar Land Rover’s own ecosystem, distributed across its global manufacturing network, with sourcing and partnerships aligned to JLR’s strategy.

In short, Ford is not involved in making Jaguar engines today. Jaguar Land Rover has moved toward its own modern engine family and electrified powertrains under Tata ownership, with Ingenium as the backbone of its current lineup.

What this means for enthusiasts and buyers

For enthusiasts, this shift means that future Jaguar performance and efficiency come from in-house engineering choices rather than Ford-era designs. For buyers, it translates to a modern engine family designed to balance performance, efficiency, and emissions targets set by JLR, with ongoing investment in electrification and new powertrain technologies.

Summary

Ford no longer makes Jaguar engines. Jaguar Land Rover, now part of Tata Motors, designs and manufactures its own engines, led by the Ingenium family, and continues to expand its electrified powertrain offerings. Ford’s involvement with Jaguar’s engines belongs to a past era that ended with the 2008 acquisition, after which JLR charted its own course in engine technology and electrification.
