Do 2024 Silverados have an AFM?

No. The 2024 Silverado lineup uses GM’s Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) rather than the older Active Fuel Management (AFM) branding. When cylinder deactivation is employed on these trucks, it’s part of DFM, not AFM as a separate feature name.

To understand what this means, it helps to know that GM introduced cylinder deactivation years ago under AFM and later transitioned to Dynamic Fuel Management to cover more engine configurations and operating scenarios. In 2024 Silverados, the gas V8 engines use DFM to optimize fuel economy by selectively deactivating cylinders during light-load conditions, while the diesel Duramax and smaller gasoline engines rely on other efficiency technologies.

Which engines in the 2024 Silverado use Dynamic Fuel Management

These are the Silverado gas engines that include Dynamic Fuel Management (the cylinder-deactivation feature in GM’s current terminology):

  • 5.3L EcoTec3 V8

  • 6.2L EcoTec3 V8

Note: The 2.7L Turbo inline-4 and the 3.0L Duramax diesel do not use AFM/DFM cylinder deactivation as part of their standard efficiency features. They rely on their respective turbocharging, direct injection, and diesel-specific systems to optimize fuel economy.

What to expect with DFM in daily driving

Dynamic Fuel Management operates behind the scenes to switch between active cylinders based on driving conditions, engine load, and speed. When conditions are favorable for efficiency, the system may deactivate cylinders to run as a smaller engine; when more power or responsiveness is needed, it reactivates the cylinders to restore full V8 performance. The transition is designed to be smooth so most drivers don’t notice the change.

Owners looking to maximize efficiency should still follow standard maintenance and driving best practices, such as keeping tires inflated to recommended pressures, regular oil changes, and mindful acceleration and braking.

Summary

In the 2024 Silverado lineup, AFM as a branded feature is not used. Instead, GM employs Dynamic Fuel Management to achieve cylinder-deactivation-based efficiency on the gas engines, specifically the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s. The 2.7L Turbo and the 3.0L Duramax diesel do not use AFM/DFM cylinder deactivation as part of their fuel-saving strategy. For the most accurate configuration on a given truck, check the exact build or ask a dealer, as features can vary by trim and option packages.

How do I know if my Silverado has an AFM?

You can tell if your Silverado has Active Fuel Management (AFM) by checking for a "V4" indicator on the dashboard, looking for AFM solenoids and labels on the engine, or checking the vehicle's window sticker or VIN. Visual inspection of the engine's valley cover and valve covers can also reveal its presence.
On the dashboard

  • V4 Mode Indicator: If your truck has an AFM system, you can check the dashboard's information display. It will often show a "V4" message when the system is active, according to this YouTube video.

On the engine
  • AFM labels and solenoids: Look for labels on the engine cover that say "AFM" or "Active Fuel Management." You can also see solenoids and wiring on the valve covers associated with the AFM system, explains Newparts.com and JustAnswer.
  • Valley Cover: Inspect the "valley cover" on top of the engine. If it has a ribbed design with solenoids on the underside, it indicates the presence of an AFM system, notes Summit Racing.

In documentation
  • Window Sticker: Check your vehicle's original window sticker. It should have information about the features it was equipped with from the factory, including AFM, says Reddit users.
  • VIN: You can use your truck's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to look up its original factory equipment through an online decoder or by contacting a dealership, according to Reddit users.

Does the 2024 6.2 have an AFM?

It does both AFM and autostart. But they had a spat of bad reviews in December (Amazon). Range seems to draw more juice, doesn't disable autostart, and has far more LED's than seem necessary.

Does the new 5.3 have an AFM?

Systems themselves it's because of the actual design of the lifter. Too the design does tend to be problematic. And so AFM is both a software.

Does the 2025 Silverado 5.3 have cylinder deactivation?

5.3L EcoTec3 V8
With innovative direct injection, cylinder deactivation, and continuously variable valve timing technology, this engine will surprise you with its capabilities mile after mile. The 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine gets 355 horsepower, 383 pound-feet of torque, and up to 17 city and 21 highway MPG.
