How many rear fog lights are there?

The number of rear fog lights on a vehicle can vary, but typically there are either one or two rear fog lights installed. Rear fog lights are an important safety feature that help increase the visibility of a vehicle in poor weather conditions.

The number of rear fog lights on a vehicle can vary depending on the make, model, and location:



  • One rear fog light: Many vehicles, especially smaller cars, have a single rear fog light installed on the left or right side of the rear of the vehicle.

  • Two rear fog lights: Larger vehicles, such as trucks and SUVs, often have two rear fog lights installed, one on each side of the rear of the vehicle.


The placement and number of rear fog lights are regulated by various automotive safety standards and laws around the world. Drivers should always check their vehicle's specifications to ensure the rear fog lights are functioning properly.

Is it OK to drive with fog lights on all the time?


Fog lights need to be used at the right times to combat reduced visibility, otherwise you could be a danger to yourself and other drivers. Using them at the right time should aid safe winter driving but using fog lights at the wrong time could mean you are breaking the law and endangering other drivers.



Is there a rear fog light?


Like the fog lights on the front of your car help make you more visible to oncoming traffic, rear fog lights make you more visible to people behind you. There are several types of rear fog lights. Some take xenon or halogen headlight bulbs, but other rear fog lamps are made up of LED lights.



What year did rear fog lights become mandatory?


High intensity rear fog lamps become a mandatory fitment to most vehicles manufactured after 1 October 1979 and used from 1 April 1980.



Is rear fog light and tail light same?

Unlike the conventional rear lights, or the brake light, rear fog lights are distinguished by their higher luminosity. They are significantly brighter, making them conspicuous even in severe weather conditions.



Can I drive with rear fog lights on?


You must not use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226 of the Highway Code) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.



Are rear fog lights illegal in the US?


There are no Federal requirements that apply to rear fog lamps, and, as noted above, we are not conversant with state requirements.



Is color changing fog lights illegal?


The person in front looking in their mirror. Might think that it's an emergency services vehicle behind them. And sometimes they will panic. And do silly things to try and get out of your way.



Can you have 4 fog lights?


State statutes dictate a driver cannot add more than two fog lamps mounted on the front of their vehicle between 12-30 inches above the ground. Adjust the lights so the top of the projected fog beam pattern from 25 feet away is about 4 inches down from the light's center when the fog lamps face straight forward.



Do you only have one rear fog light?


Some cars are designed with one or two rear fog lights. However, only the light on the driver's side is turned on to avoid confusion with brake lights. If road visibility is extremely poor and your car doesn't have rear fog lights, a driver behind you may not be able to see your car until it's too late.



How many rear fog lights do cars have?


Typically, the rear fog light is a bright red light that is the same brightness as your brake lights. In Europe, two rear fog lights are common, but in the United States, this is not currently allowed.
