How much power can a 440 make?

The 440 cubic inch (7.2 liter) V8 engine, commonly known as the 440, is a powerful and iconic engine that has been used in a variety of Chrysler vehicles over the years. The amount of power it can produce depends on several factors, including the engine's configuration, modifications, and the specific application.

Stock 440 Engine Power Output

In its stock, unmodified form, a 440 engine can typically produce around 375 to 390 horsepower and 480 to 500 lb-ft of torque. This power output was achieved in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the 440 was used in high-performance Chrysler models like the Dodge Charger, Plymouth Roadrunner, and Chrysler 300.

Factors Affecting 440 Engine Power

The power output of a 440 engine can be increased through various modifications and upgrades, such as:

  • Increasing the compression ratio

  • Installing larger or more efficient cylinder heads

  • Upgrading the camshaft and valvetrain

  • Adding forced induction, such as a supercharger or turbocharger

  • Improving the exhaust system

With these types of modifications, a 440 engine can produce over 500 horsepower and even reach 600 horsepower or more in high-performance applications.p>

Real-World Examples of 440 Engine Power

In the 1960s and 1970s, Chrysler offered several high-performance models equipped with the 440 engine, including:

  • Dodge Charger R/T: 375 horsepower

  • Plymouth Roadrunner: 390 horsepower

  • Chrysler 300 (1970): 385 horsepower

Today, enthusiasts and builders continue to push the limits of the 440 engine, with some custom-built examples producing over 600 horsepower.p>

How much horsepower did the 440 really have?

And while the Mopar 440 does several things very well, we've always felt that with a few tweaks the engine was capable of well over the 375 horsepower rating it got from the factory.

How much HP can a Mopar 383 make?

The affordable and underrated 383 gets a huge boost in the arm by Muscle Motors—to the tune of 559 hp and 611 lb-ft. The small engine in any car manufacturer's portfolio has a hard time getting any respect, and the same is true within the Chrysler brand.

Which is better 440 or Hemi?

Off the showroom floor, a 440 Magnum was faster than a 426 Hemi in the 1/4 mile due to the extra weight of the Hemi. That's not a myth, that's a fact. Once modified, of course Hemi power is almost unlimited. Lee Cotgrave did you know that originally the 426 hemi was a dog?

Can you turn a 440 into a Hemi?

Thus neither factory nor race-type Hemi heads can be bolted on or readily adapted to fit plentiful B (383, 400) or RB (413, 440) blocks even though bore spacing, head bolts, most water passages, and other dimensions are the same.

How much horsepower does a 440 stroker kit have?

As far as the horsepower level or the strength that our parts are capable of withstanding, we generally rate them very conservatively at about 1000 horsepower. Many customers and some magazine builds have made over 1400 horsepower on the dyno, and are still running many years later without failure.
