How to unlock an Acura trunk?

The quickest way to unlock an Acura trunk is to use the key fob’s trunk release or the trunk button on the driver’s door panel. If the fob battery is dead, you may need to use the mechanical key or a hidden trunk lock option, and some models support remote opening via the AcuraLink app. If these methods fail, contact roadside assistance for help.

Common methods to unlock the trunk

Most Acura models offer multiple reliable ways to open the trunk. The following options cover the majority of current and recent vehicles.

  • Key fob trunk release: Press and hold the trunk button on the fob (the icon usually shows a raised trunk) until the trunk unlocks or opens.

  • Driver’s door panel trunk release: Locate the trunk release button or switch on the edge of the driver’s door panel or dash. You may need to press it or hold it, depending on the model.

  • Mechanical key lock (where available): Some models provide a physical key cylinder for the trunk. Use the mechanical key blade to unlock from outside. Exact location varies by model; consult your owner’s manual for specifics.

  • Hidden keyhole behind the emblem (older or certain trims): Some trunks have a concealed keyhole behind the trunk emblem or near the license plate area for manual unlock. If present, insert the key blade and turn to release the latch.

  • Remote trunk opening via AcuraLink app (where supported): On newer models, the AcuraLink smartphone app may allow you to unlock or open the trunk remotely, provided the vehicle is connected and your account is active.

  • Battery-dead scenarios: If the key fob battery is dead, replace the battery or use the mechanical key in a supported lock. If electronics are unresponsive, contact roadside assistance or your dealer.

Not every model supports every option, and some features depend on year, trim, and active settings. Always check your owner’s manual for model-specific instructions.

Model-specific notes

Placement and availability of trunk-access features vary by model and year. Here are quick guidelines for popular Acura lines.

TLX and ILX

TLX and ILX typically offer a trunk release on the key fob and a button on the driver’s door panel. Some trims may include a hidden mechanical keyhole on the trunk lid or behind the emblem for manual access if the fob is dead. For precise locations, consult the owner’s manual for your year and trim level.

MDX and RDX

MDX and RDX generally provide remote trunk release via the fob and a trunk button on the driver’s door. Many models also offer a mechanical key cylinder or a hidden trunk keyhole on the lid for manual unlock when needed. If you rely on the app-based remote unlock, ensure your vehicle supports AcuraLink and that it’s properly set up.

Older or specialty trims

Some older Acura models or less common trims may place the trunk release in slightly different spots or rely more on the mechanical key option. If you can’t locate the release, refer to the manual or contact a dealer for model-specific guidance.

What to do if you’re locked out or the trunk won’t unlock

If none of the standard methods work, avoid forcing the trunk or damaging the latch. Instead, follow these steps to get help and protect your vehicle.

  1. Check the key fob battery and replace if needed; try again after replacement.

  2. Attempt access via the driver’s door panel or AcuraLink app if your model supports it.

  3. Look for a mechanical key lock or hidden keyhole on the trunk lid per your manual.

  4. Contact Acura Roadside Assistance or your local dealer for professional help, especially if the trunk latch is jammed or electrical systems are unresponsive.

Note: Have proof of ownership ready when seeking assistance, and describe your model and year to speed up service.

Summary

Unlocking an Acura trunk is typically straightforward with the key fob, the driver’s door panel button, or a mechanical key on models that include a physical lock. In newer vehicles, the AcuraLink app may offer remote trunk opening where supported. If the fob battery is dead or electronics fail, switch to the mechanical key option or seek roadside assistance. Always refer to your specific model’s manual for exact locations and instructions, as features and placements can vary by year and trim.

A manual trunk release can be found inside the car, often on the driver's side near the seat or as a lever in the glove box. Many vehicles also have a button on the key fob, a hidden button on the outside of the trunk, or fold-down rear seats that allow you to access the inside of the trunk and manually open the latch. Inside the trunk, you will find an emergency release, which is a glow-in-the-dark handle or tab that opens the trunk from the inside.
