What engine is in the Jaguar XJ?

There isn’t a single engine for the XJ. Across its generations, Jaguar used a mix of V8 and diesel engines, and earlier models even featured inline-six and V12 powertrains.

This article surveys the main powertrain options that have powered the XJ, with a focus on the modern X351 generation (2010–2019) and a look back at earlier eras to explain how engine choices varied by model year and market.

Engine options by era

From the classic days of the XJ to the final generation, powerplants evolved from traditional six- and twelve-cylinder configurations to modern turbocharged V6 and V8 engines. The latest XJ offered a concise trio of engines designed for performance, refinement, and efficiency, depending on region.

Modern XJ (X351, 2010–2019) engines

In the final XJ generation, the core engine lineup centered on three main families. The options commonly found in many markets were:

  • 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine, often supercharged for extra performance

  • 5.0-liter V8 petrol engine, available in standard and high-performance variants

  • 3.0-liter diesel V6 (in selected markets), offering improved fuel economy

These engines provided a range of outputs and driving characteristics, from smooth, effortless cruising to high-serie performance, with diesel variants adding efficiency for long-distance use.

Earlier XJ generations (pre-2010): general notes

Before the X351, the XJ lineup was broader in character. Classic XJs leaned on inline-six and V12 powertrains for luxury and smoothness, while later models increasingly used V8 configurations. Diesel options appeared in certain markets as fuel economy considerations grew, but the engine choices varied significantly by year and region.

How to identify your XJ engine

If you’re trying to determine which engine powers a specific XJ, start with official documentation and the vehicle’s VIN. The VIN and engine code can be decoded by Jaguar’s service databases or a dealer, and the engine badge on the engine bay or rear badge often indicates the family (for example, a V6 or V8 designation). Cross-checking the build plate, window sticker, or service records will also confirm the exact engine in your car.

Summary

The Jaguar XJ has not used a single engine, but a lineage of powerplants that evolved with the model’s generations. In the latest XJ (2010–2019), buyers commonly encountered a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged petrol, a 5.0-liter V8 petrol (including high-performance variants), and a 3.0-liter diesel V6 in some markets. Earlier XJs offered a broader mix, including inline-sixes and V12s, with later years incorporating more V8s and diesels depending on market and year.

Bottom line

If you’re buying or restoring an XJ, your engine choice will hinge on the model year and market. For casual cruising with a blend of refinement and efficiency, the 3.0L V6 diesel or petrol could be an attractive option; for outright performance, the 5.0L V8 variants deliver the most power, while the classic appeal of V12-era engines remains a talking point for historic models.

Does Jaguar use BMW engines?

From 2002 until 2006, BMW engines were used in the L322-generation Range Rover, including the M62 4.4-liter V8, even though BMW had already ended its relationship Range Rover, and released a new V8, the N62. Since 2018, multiple sources have reported that the 2020 Jaguar F-Type will be powered by a BMW V8.

Is the Jaguar 5.0 V8 reliable?

Craig Jones yup I have a modified XJR with that engine, 9 years daily driven, thing is really reliable and capable, very underrated. Never dropped along the road in the 9 years, just keep on top of the maintenance (which is not that expensive for a luxury car) and it will do over 300k miles with ease.

Is the Jaguar 5.0 a Ford engine?

No, the Jaguar 5.0L V8 is not a Ford engine; it was designed by Jaguar, and the company currently makes its own engines. While Ford owned Jaguar at one point and used a variant of the engine in some Lincoln and Ford models, the original design predates Ford's ownership and was an in-house Jaguar creation.

  • Jaguar design: The AJ-V8 family of engines, which includes the 5.0L, was designed by Jaguar before its acquisition by Ford.
  • Ford usage: Ford did use a variant of this engine in certain models, such as the Lincoln LS and the Ford Thunderbird.
  • Current ownership: Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is now owned by Tata Motors, and they produce a separate line of Ingenium engines for their vehicles.
