What was the design flaw of the Ford Pinto?


The main design flaw of the Ford Pinto was its rear-end vulnerability to fuel tank rupture and ignition in collisions.   • Cost-benefit analysis: Ford conducted a cost-benefit analysis that concluded it was cheaper to pay for accident lawsuits than to recall and fix the vehicles. 
  • Correction: Ford eventually implemented a fix in the 1977 models by adding a plastic baffle between the tank and differential, a small improvement to prevent fuel leakage. 



Why did Ford not fix the Pinto?


Simply, Ford's internal "cost-benefit analysis," which places a dollar value on human life, said it wasn't profitable to make the changes sooner. Ford's cost-benefit analysis showed it was cheaper to endure lawsuits and settlements than to remedy the Pinto design.

Instead of fixing the defect, Ford chose to conduct a cost-benefit analysis. Their conclusion: the costs of recalling and fixing 11 million Pintos (estimated at $121 million) far outweighed the projected payouts for 180 burn deaths and 180 serious injuries (estimated at $49.5 million).
