What kind of oil change does a Subaru need?

Subaru vehicles require a specific type of oil change to maintain their performance and longevity. The recommended oil change interval and oil type can vary depending on the Subaru model, year, and driving conditions. In general, Subaru owners should follow the manufacturer's guidelines for oil change frequency and use the recommended oil grade.

Subaru Oil Change Interval

Subaru typically recommends changing the oil and filter every 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, this can vary depending on the model and driving conditions. For example, Subaru may recommend more frequent oil changes for vehicles used in severe driving conditions, such as towing, frequent off-road use, or driving in extreme temperatures. Always refer to your Subaru's owner's manual for the recommended oil change interval.

Subaru Oil Type

Subaru recommends using a synthetic oil that meets the following specifications:

  • API Service Rating: SN or higher

  • Viscosity: 0W-20 or 5W-30

The specific oil type may vary depending on the Subaru model and year. Check your owner's manual or with a Subaru dealer to determine the recommended oil type for your vehicle.

Subaru Oil Change Procedure

Changing the oil in a Subaru typically involves the following steps:

  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.

  • Locate the oil drain plug, usually located at the bottom of the oil pan, and place a drain pan underneath.

  • Unscrew the drain plug and allow the old oil to drain completely.

  • Once drained, replace the drain plug and tighten it securely.

  • Locate the oil filter, usually accessible from the top or side of the engine, and remove it using an oil filter wrench.

  • Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter and screw it on until secure.

  • Locate the oil fill cap, usually on the top of the engine, and pour in the recommended amount and type of new oil.

  • Start the engine and check for any leaks around the oil filter and drain plug.

  • Reset the oil change indicator light or reset the oil change reminder in the vehicle's settings.

Remember to dispose of the old oil and filter properly, as they can be harmful to the environment if not handled correctly.
