How to make sure timing is correct?


If the timing is too advanced, it will crank hard when it is fully warmed up. It might crank normally when it's cold. If the timing is way too advanced, it will crank hard when it's cold too, and may be impossible to start when it's hot. If it always starts easily, it's pretty close to where it needs to be.



How do I know if my engine timing is correct?


If you hear telltale signs of the timing of your car not being quite right, such as pinging, backfiring, or if the car runs too rich or too lean, you will need to either take it to a mechanic or adjust the timing yourself.



What should my timing be at idle?


After tuning thousands of different engines, I find that most engines will idle nicely with ignition advance in the 15 to 20 degree vicinity so this is where I'd suggest starting out. 15 degrees is almost certainly going to be less than the MBT timing, but there are some advantages to doing this.



What is the correct ignition timing?


Most stock street engines call for 6 to 8 degrees of initial advance, but this is not set in stone. Engines with longer duration camshafts and other modifications often demand more initial timing. It's not unusual to input 14 to perhaps 18 degrees of initial timing for engines with big cams.

What should RPM read at idle?


Typically, engines idle at about 600-800 rpm. Older engines may go up to 1200 rpm or more while warming up. But if the engine is revving up while idling, even after it's sufficiently warmed up, you might have a problem. High idle speeds waste fuel, cause extra wear and tear on your engine, and can be unsafe as well.



What is bad engine timing?


The engine misfires. Once a timing chain is stretched and has lost its integrity, the chain may skip a gear and lose the necessary coordination leading to an engine misfire. Repeated misfires could indicate a timing chain issue and should be investigated.



How many degrees of timing is okay?


Running that much timing will cause the engine to run out of steam quicker too in the rpm range. I would say for a performance setting and to avoid damage from changing weather conditions, driving conditions and gas quality, keep it around 14-15.



What is normal engine timing?


That is typically 15-35 degrees before TDC (top dead center) of the power stroke depending on the engine speed. Best power is achieved when ignition timing is set to fire the spark ahead of time to reach that peak pressure at about 2 degrees after TDC.
