Where can you charge a Toyota bZ4X?

The Toyota bZ4X is an all-electric SUV that can be charged at a variety of locations, including public charging stations, home charging stations, and even some workplaces. The specific charging options available will depend on your location and the charging infrastructure in your area.

Public Charging Stations

One of the most convenient ways to charge your Toyota bZ4X is at a public charging station. These stations are typically located in high-traffic areas, such as shopping centers, grocery stores, and parking garages. Many public charging stations offer both Level 2 and DC fast charging options, allowing you to charge your vehicle quickly and efficiently. To find the nearest public charging station, you can use an app like PlugShare or check with your local government or utility provider.

Home Charging Stations

If you have a garage or designated parking space at your home, you can install a home charging station for your Toyota bZ4X. This is often the most convenient and cost-effective way to charge your vehicle, as you can simply plug it in overnight and wake up to a fully charged battery. Home charging stations can be either Level 2 or Level 1, with Level 2 being the faster and more efficient option.

Workplace Charging

Some employers may offer charging stations for their employees' electric vehicles, including the Toyota bZ4X. If your workplace has charging stations, you can take advantage of them during the day to top up your battery while you're at work. This can be a great option for those who don't have the ability to install a home charging station.

Other Charging Options

In addition to public, home, and workplace charging, there are a few other options for charging your Toyota bZ4X:

  • Roadside assistance: Some roadside assistance providers, such as AAA, may offer mobile charging services for electric vehicles in emergency situations.

  • Charging while traveling: Many hotels, restaurants, and other businesses are now offering charging stations for electric vehicle owners, making it easier to charge your bZ4X while on the road.

  • Portable chargers: You can also purchase a portable charger for your Toyota bZ4X, which can be used to charge your vehicle in a variety of locations, including campgrounds or remote areas.

No matter where you need to charge your Toyota bZ4X, there are a variety of options available to ensure that you can keep your vehicle powered up and ready to go.

Can I charge my Toyota bZ4X at a Tesla charging station?

Yes, you can charge a Toyota bZ4X at a Tesla charging station using a NACS-to-CCS1 adapter, which is provided by Toyota for existing models. Starting with the 2025 model year, future Toyota EVs will feature a native NACS port, making adapters unnecessary. For now, you will need the adapter and a properly set up Tesla account, as payment is handled through the Tesla app.
For existing bZ4X owners (2023-2025 models)

  • Get the adapter: Request the complimentary NACS-to-CCS1 adapter from your Toyota dealer, as Toyota is sending letters to customers with instructions.
  • Use the Tesla app: Download the Tesla app and add your vehicle. You will need to register a form of payment for charging sessions.
  • Find compatible stations: Use the Tesla app to find compatible Supercharger locations, which are indicated by the "Magic Dock" or other adaptations for non-Tesla vehicles.
  • Connect and charge: Plug the adapter into the station's NACS connector and then plug the CCS1 end into your bZ4X. Use the Tesla app to start the session.

For future bZ4X owners (2025 and beyond)
  • No adapter needed: Future models will have a native NACS port, allowing for direct connection to Tesla Superchargers without an adapter.
  • Use the Tesla app: You will still need the Tesla app to manage payment and start a charging session.
  • Find compatible stations: The Tesla app will show compatible charging stations and allow you to initiate a charge.

Why are Toyota bZ4X not selling?

The Toyota bZ4X hasn't sold well due to a combination of factors, including a major recall for potential wheel detachment, limited driving range, slower-than-average charging speeds, and a design and price that failed to stand out against competitors. While aggressive lease incentives did boost sales significantly in 2024, the vehicle has faced a steep sales decline in 2025 due to these ongoing issues. Toyota is addressing some of these concerns in its 2026 update.

Reasons for poor sales

  • Major recalls: A critical safety recall occurred where wheels could fall off, forcing Toyota to halt sales and buy back vehicles, which severely damaged consumer confidence. Another recall involved a faulty defroster.
  • Limited range and charging: Competitors like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Hyundai Ioniq 5 offer more competitive range, and the bZ4X's DC fast-charging capabilities were flagged as slow and road-trip unfriendly.
  • Uncompetitive pricing and design: Even after price cuts, the bZ4X was seen by some as too expensive for its performance and features. Its design was also considered bland compared to competitors.
  • Brand perception: Toyota's history of promoting hybrid vehicles and being critical of a full EV transition has made some consumers skeptical of their commitment to the EV market.

How Toyota plans to address the issues
  • Updated model: Toyota is releasing an updated 2026 model to address complaints.
  • Improved range: The new model offers a significantly improved driving range of up to 314 miles, a 25% increase over the 2025 model.
  • New EV models: Toyota is also slated to release new electric models like the C-HR and BZ Woodland in 2026.
