Who makes Chevy Volt batteries?

The lithium-ion battery cells for the Chevrolet Volt are supplied by LG Chem, now LG Energy Solution, with General Motors handling the final pack assembly at its facilities in Michigan.

Cell supply and manufacture

To understand who makes the Volt’s batteries, it helps to separate the cell supplier from the pack assembly. The cells themselves come from LG Chem, a South Korean company that has produced automotive lithium-ion cells for GM and other automakers for years.

  • LG Chem (South Korea), now LG Energy Solution, provides the lithium-ion battery cells used in the Volt’s packs under contract with General Motors.

In short, LG Chem supplies the essential cells, and GM integrates them into complete packs at its own manufacturing sites.

Pack assembly and production sites

The cells are manufactured by LG Chem at its facilities in Asia, with the final battery packs assembled by GM at a Michigan facility to meet GM's integration standards.

  • Brownstown Township, Michigan: GM's battery-pack assembly plant for the Volt, where modules were put into the final pack.

This arrangement meant a hybrid approach: cells from LG Chem, assembled into complete packs at GM's own manufacturing sites in the United States.

Generation details

Gen 1 (2010–2015): 16 kWh pack

The first-generation Volt used a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack designed for plug-in hybrid operation, with an all-electric range in the mid-30s miles on the EPA cycle.

Gen 2 (2015–2019): 18.4 kWh pack

The second generation expanded to an 18.4 kWh pack, improving the all-electric range to about 53 miles on the EPA cycle, while retaining a gasoline engine for extended-range capability.

Note: The Volt was discontinued after the 2019 model year, as GM shifted its focus to the broader Chevrolet electric-vehicle lineup. LG Energy Solution remains a major supplier for GM’s newer EV programs.

Summary

In brief, the Chevy Volt’s batteries are made from cells supplied by LG Chem (now LG Energy Solution), with the final packs assembled by General Motors at its Michigan facilities. The Gen 1 and Gen 2 Volt used 16 kWh and 18.4 kWh packs, respectively, before the model was retired in favor of GM’s newer electric-vehicle lineup.

Where are Chevy Volt batteries made?

The battery cells for the Volt are manufactured by LG Chem in South Korea and then transported to the U.S., where the battery packs are assembled at a specialized facility in Brownstown Charter Township, Michigan, owned and operated by General Motors.
