Who was first GM or Chevy?

General Motors (GM) and Chevrolet are two of the most well-known automotive brands in the world, but which one came first? The answer may surprise you.

The Birth of General Motors

General Motors was founded in 1908 by William C. Durant, a businessman who had previously founded the Buick Motor Company. Durant brought together several existing automobile manufacturers, including Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Oakland (which later became Pontiac), to create the General Motors Corporation.

The Arrival of Chevrolet

Chevrolet, on the other hand, was founded in 1911 by Louis Chevrolet, a Swiss-born race car driver, and William C. Durant. Chevrolet was initially an independent company, but in 1918, Durant used Chevrolet to regain control of General Motors, which he had lost a few years earlier.

So, while General Motors was founded in 1908, Chevrolet came into existence three years later, in 1911. However, Chevrolet quickly became one of the most important and successful brands within the General Motors portfolio, and it remains so to this day.
