Why does Lexus use NuLuxe?

Lexus, the luxury vehicle brand owned by Toyota, has made the strategic decision to use a synthetic material called NuLuxe instead of traditional leather in many of its vehicle interiors. This choice reflects Lexus' commitment to sustainability and innovation, as NuLuxe offers several advantages over leather.

What is NuLuxe?

NuLuxe is a high-quality, leather-like material developed by Lexus. It is a synthetic, polyurethane-based material that is designed to mimic the look, feel, and durability of genuine leather. NuLuxe is produced using a proprietary manufacturing process that results in a material that is soft, supple, and highly resistant to wear and tear.

Advantages of NuLuxe over Leather

  • Sustainability: NuLuxe is a more environmentally-friendly alternative to leather, as it does not require the use of animal hides or the associated environmental impact of leather production.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: NuLuxe is generally less expensive to produce than genuine leather, allowing Lexus to offer a premium interior experience at a more accessible price point.

  • Durability: NuLuxe is highly resistant to wear, fading, and staining, making it a more durable and low-maintenance option compared to leather.

  • Customization: NuLuxe can be easily customized in a wide range of colors and textures, allowing Lexus to offer a greater variety of interior design options.

By using NuLuxe, Lexus is able to provide its customers with a high-quality, luxurious interior experience while also aligning with the brand's commitment to sustainability and innovation.

When did Lexus introduce NuLuxe?

Lexus started using NuLuxe in 2014, initially debuting it on lower-end models like the CT 200h. Since then, its use has expanded to most Lexus models, though it is not available on the flagship LS and LC sedans or the LX SUV.

  • Debut: NuLuxe was introduced in 2014.
  • Initial availability: It was first offered on entry-level models, such as the CT 200h.
  • Current availability: It is now a standard or available option on nearly all Lexus models, with the exception of the LS, LC, and LX.

Is Lexus NuLuxe real leather?

No, Lexus NuLuxe is not real leather; it is a high-quality synthetic leather upholstery designed to look and feel like real leather but is more durable, easier to care for, and more environmentally friendly to produce. It is a synthetic material, not a natural one, though its quality aims to be comparable to or better than traditional leather for many applications, notes Capital One and Butler Lexus of South Atlanta.

  • It is synthetic: NuLuxe is a high-quality, man-made material that mimics the look and feel of genuine leather.
  • It is eco-friendly: Its manufacturing process is designed to be more environmentally friendly, resulting in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared to other synthetic materials, says Lexus of South Pointe.
  • It is durable and low-maintenance: NuLuxe is engineered to be very durable, resist stains, and be easy to clean, making it a popular choice for families.
  • It offers benefits over real leather: It can be a better choice for some drivers as it resists dye transfer, is often more durable, and does not require the same level of specialized care as real leather, explains Reddit users.

What are the disadvantages of leatherette?

Although leatherette is durable, it may crack or peel over time with regular use. Leatherette does not have the same value as genuine leather, so it may not add as much value to your home as a leather sofa.

How long will NuLuxe last?

Nuluxe is probably one of the most durable seating materials I've seen before. It is softer than the synthetic leathers from the competition but it holds up to wear very well. 75k miles when I sold my IS250 and the seats looked brand new.
