Are RAM trucks made by Ford?

No—the RAM brand is not made by Ford. RAM trucks are produced by Stellantis (the parent company formed from the FCA and PSA merger) at North American plants, independent of Ford.

Who makes RAM trucks?

RAM is the pickup-focused brand of Stellantis. It competes directly with Ford's F-Series in the full-size truck segment, but the RAM brand and Ford operate under separate corporate umbrellas.

Brand ownership

RAM falls under Stellantis, a multinational automaker created in 2021 by merging Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) with PSA Group. Ford Motor Company remains an independent automaker. The two brands are competitors in the pickup market but do not share ownership or production facilities.

Primary RAM models

The RAM lineup centers on pickups, including the Ram 1500 (light-duty) and Ram 2500/3500 (heavy-duty). The brand has also been pursuing electrified options, such as the Ram 1500 REV, as part of Stellantis’ broader electrification strategy.

The RAM pickup lineup currently focuses on two main models:

  • Ram 1500 — light-duty pickup

  • Ram 2500/3500 — heavy-duty pickups

The list above highlights the core products in the RAM truck family and notes the ongoing expansion into electrified variants.

Where are RAM trucks made?

RAM vehicles are built primarily at Stellantis facilities in North America. The main assembly sites include Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, and Saltillo Assembly Plant in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. Other components and model variants are produced at additional Stellantis facilities.

Current production locations

  • Sterling Heights Assembly Plant — Sterling Heights, Michigan (Ram 1500)

  • Saltillo Assembly Plant — Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico (Ram 2500/3500)

These plants are operated by Stellantis and are distinct from Ford’s manufacturing network. Ford builds its own F-Series trucks at facilities in the United States and Canada.

How does Ford fit into the picture?

Ford Motor Company is a separate automaker that produces the Ford F-Series, one of the best-selling truck lines in the United States. While RAM and Ford both market full-size pickups, they are produced by different parent companies and do not share production lines.

Summary

No—the RAM brand is owned by Stellantis, not Ford, and RAM trucks are produced at Stellantis facilities in North America (primarily Michigan and Mexico). Ford, by contrast, manufactures the F-Series trucks. The two brands are competitors in the pickup market but operate independently.

Who actually makes Ram trucks?

Chrysler acquired Dodge in 1981 and kept their most popular models, including RAM pickup trucks. From 1981 to 2009, their pickup trucks were named “Dodge RAM,”. After 2009, RAM trucks became its own brand.

Why are Ram trucks no longer Dodge?

Dodge and Ram split in 2009 so that each brand could focus on its own core products. The separation allowed Dodge to concentrate on performance vehicles like muscle cars (Challengercap C h a l l e n g e r𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑟 and Chargercap C h a r g e r𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑟) and SUVs, while Ram could dedicate its resources to developing and marketing new pickup trucks tailored for commercial and consumer truck buyers. This strategic move enabled each brand to build a stronger identity and better serve its specific customer base.

  • Dodge focus: The split enabled Dodge to focus on performance cars, such as the Challenger and Charger, and expand its lineup with other passenger vehicles like the Durango SUV.
  • Ram focus: Ram became a standalone brand to better serve serious truck customers with innovative features, powerful engines, and a focus on towing and hauling capabilities.
  • Business strategy: Creating separate brands allowed for separate leadership, strategic direction, and more targeted product development, helping each brand thrive in its respective market.
  • Timeline: The split occurred in 2009 as part of a restructuring by Chrysler Group LLC. The Ram brand was spun off from Dodge, and the rebranding was completed by 2010.

Is Dodge Ram owned by Ford?

No, Ford does not own Ram; Ram is owned by Stellantis, a global automaker. Ram was split from Dodge in 2009 to become its own brand of pickup trucks, and later became part of Stellantis when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) merged with the French company PSA Group.

  • Ram's parent company: Stellantis.
  • Relationship to Dodge: Ram trucks originated as "Dodge Ram" trucks, but the brand was separated in 2009 to focus on pickup trucks, while Dodge continued to make cars, SUVs, and minivans.
  • Relationship to Stellantis: Stellantis was formed in 2021 from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and PSA Group. Ram is now one of the brands under the Stellantis umbrella.

Why are thieves targeting Ram trucks?

The new Dodge Ram trucks are popular targets for thieves because of their high value. These trucks are in high demand and can fetch a high price on the black market, making them an attractive target for organized theft rings.
