Do they still make the Ford Cougar?

As of 2025, Ford does not manufacture a model named "Cougar." The name is tied to the historic Mercury Cougar, a model that ended production in the early 2000s, and the Mercury brand itself was discontinued in 2011. There is no current Ford model bearing the Cougar name, and Ford has not announced a revival of the name.

A quick history of the Cougar name

Here is a brief overview of how the Cougar name has been used and where it stands today.

  • The Mercury Cougar began life in 1967 as a more upscale, sportier variant of the Ford Mustang, evolving through several generations before its production ended in the early 2000s.

  • The Mercury brand itself was discontinued in 2011, marking the end of the Cougar lineage under a Mercury badge.

  • Since then, Ford has continued to offer performance and pony car options through the Mustang, but there has been no official use of the "Cougar" name on a current model.

In short, the Cougar name remains part of automotive history and classic-car culture, but there is no active vehicle carrying that name today.

Where Ford stands today

Ford’s contemporary lineup emphasizes modern technologies, electrification, and SUVs, with no model named Cougar in production. The closest link to the Cougar heritage is the Ford Mustang family, including the traditional gasoline-powered Mustang and the all-electric Mustang Mach-E.

  • Mustang – the enduring, historically linked pony car from Ford.

  • Mustang Mach-E – Ford’s all-electric crossover that expands the brand’s performance and efficiency options.

  • Other current models – including the Bronco, Escape, Explorer, F-150, and more, none of which carry the Cougar name.

So, there is no active “Cougar” in Ford’s current product lineup. If you encounter a vehicle or project branded as Cougar today, it would not be an official Ford production model.

What this means for enthusiasts and buyers

For collectors and fans of classic Ford/Mercury history, the Mercury Cougar remains a notable piece of American automotive nostalgia, frequently featured in auctions and car shows. However, those interested in a new vehicle should look to Ford’s Mustang lineup or other contemporary models rather than a Cougar-branded option.

Summary: The Ford Cougar does not exist today. The name belongs to a bygone Mercury model, and Ford has not revived it. The Mustang continues to carry the spirit of Ford’s performance heritage, serving as the closest link to the former Cougar lineage.
