Does the Honda Odyssey have 7 or 8 seats?

The Honda Odyssey can seat 7 or 8 passengers, depending on the seating arrangement. In its standard setup, most models offer 8 seats, but selecting second-row captain’s chairs creates a 7-passenger layout.

In the Odyssey, the second-row seating can be configured as a three-passenger bench or as two captain’s chairs with a center console. This choice changes the total from an 8-passenger 2-3-3 layout to a 7-passenger 2-2-3 layout. Availability varies by trim and market, so check your model’s current configuration.

Seat configurations

Here are the two primary seating configurations you’ll encounter in the Honda Odyssey, described by how many seats they provide and how the rows are arranged.

  • 8-passenger configuration: 2 front seats + 3 in the second row + 3 in the third row (2-3-3 layout). This is the standard setup on many trims and makes room for eight occupants.

  • 7-passenger configuration: 2 front seats + 2 in the second row (captain’s chairs) + 3 in the third row (2-2-3 layout). This reduces overall seating to seven but can improve middle-row comfort and access.

In short, you can choose between 7 or 8 seats in the Honda Odyssey by selecting second-row seating options. The 8-seat arrangement uses a three-passenger second row, while the 7-seat arrangement uses two captain’s chairs. Availability depends on trim and market, so verify your specific vehicle.

Second-row access and features

Most Odyssey models with the 7-passenger setup include the "Magic Slide" second-row seats, which slide sideways and fold to improve access to the third row. The 8-passenger bench provides three across in the middle, maintaining a wider seating footprint but slightly reducing third-row access for some passengers.

Summary

The Honda Odyssey offers both 7- and 8-passenger configurations. If you need maximum capacity, choose the 8-seat layout with a 2-3-3 arrangement. If you prioritize easier access to the back row or extra mid-row comfort, opt for the 7-seat setup with second-row captain’s chairs. Always confirm the seating arrangement on the exact trim and model year you’re considering, as availability can vary by year and market.

Why is Honda discontinuing the Odyssey?

The Honda Odyssey is not discontinued in the U.S., but its production ended in Japan in late 2021 due to the closure of the Sayama plant, which affected its availability in other markets. Additionally, the discontinuation of the HondaVac from the 2022 model year was a result of the supplier going out of business. The U.S. market continues to offer the Odyssey, but it is expected to be replaced by a new model for 2025, potentially with a hybrid option.

  • Production ended in Japan: Honda's Sayama plant in Japan, which produced the international version of the Odyssey, closed in December 2021.
  • Market availability: The closure meant the discontinuation of the Odyssey in many markets outside the U.S., such as Australia and the Philippines.
  • HondaVac discontinued: The built-in HondaVac was dropped from the 2022 model year because the supplier, Shop-Vac, went out of business.
  • Future model: Honda is expected to launch a completely redesigned Odyssey for the 2025 model year, which may include a hybrid powertrain.

Is the Honda Odyssey 7 seater or 8 seater?

The Honda Odyssey comes standard as an 8-seater, but can be converted to a 7-seater by removing the second-row center seat. This flexibility allows you to have the option of either configuration, depending on your needs at the time.

  • 8-seater configuration: Standard on all trims, it includes a removable center seat in the second row that can be stored away. When in place, it provides seating for up to eight people.
  • 7-seater configuration: Remove the center seat to create a walk-through aisle between the two captain's chairs, making it easier to access the third row. This also allows for more versatility in how you arrange the second-row seats.
  • Removable center seat: You can easily store the seat when you don't need it and re-install it when you have an extra passenger. The seat can also be folded into a console with extra cup holders and storage if you prefer to keep it in the vehicle.
