Before you begin

  • Ensure your vehicle is on a level surface. 
  • Gather the necessary tools, including an infrared thermometer or scan tool, a small clip or paper clip, a small allen key or socket for the overflow plug, and a funnel. 
  • Important: The engine must be running and the transmission fluid must be at the correct temperature to check the level accurately. 

Step 1: Warm up the engine and transmission 
  • Start the engine and let it run to warm up the transmission fluid. 
  • The target temperature is between 115–133°F (46–56°C). 

Step 2: Put the transmission into "Fluid Check" mode
  • With the engine running, shift the transmission through all the gears, pausing for about three seconds in each gear (P, R, N, D, etc.). 
  • This process activates the "Fluid Check" mode. The exact procedure can vary, so consult your owner's manual for your specific model.
  • After completing the gear shift cycle, the "D" (Drive) light on the instrument cluster may momentarily flash.
