How can I tell what type of battery is in my car?

If you need to replace the battery in your car, it's important to know what type of battery it currently has. The battery type can vary depending on the make, model, and year of your vehicle. Knowing the correct battery type will ensure you get the right replacement and avoid any compatibility issues.

Determining the Battery Type in Your Car

There are a few ways you can identify the battery type in your car:

  • Check the Battery Label - Look for a label or sticker on the battery itself. This will typically indicate the battery type, size, and other important details.

  • Consult Your Owner's Manual - Your vehicle's owner's manual should list the recommended battery type for your specific make and model.

  • Inspect the Battery Terminals - The battery terminals can provide clues about the type. For example, a top-post battery will have terminals on the top, while a side-post battery will have terminals on the side.

  • Measure the Battery Dimensions - The physical size and dimensions of the battery can help identify the type. Common car battery sizes include Group 24, 35, 51, 65, and 75.

Once you've determined the battery type, you can purchase the correct replacement battery for your vehicle.

Common Car Battery Types

The most common car battery types include:

  • Lead-Acid Batteries - These are the traditional type of car battery, using lead plates submerged in sulfuric acid. They are the most common and affordable option.

  • Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Batteries - AGM batteries use a glass mat separator between the lead plates, making them spill-proof and more resistant to vibration. They are often used in high-end vehicles.

  • Lithium-Ion Batteries - Lithium-ion car batteries are a newer, more advanced technology that is lighter and more efficient than lead-acid batteries. They are becoming more common in hybrid and electric vehicles.

Knowing the battery type in your car will help ensure you get the right replacement and maintain your vehicle's performance and reliability.

How do I know if I have an AGM or STD battery?

This is a special type of glass material that acts as a sponge, soaking up any extra water in the battery. You can tell if your product has an AGM by looking for “AGM” on the label, or by using the model number to look it up on the manufacturer's website. If you're not sure where to look, ask us!

How do I know what model battery I have?

You may find the battery part number and battery serial number on the main battery label and/or small labels located on the side of battery pack. * On certain battery packs the battery part number is printed in small lettering.

How to tell the difference between AGM and gel batteries?

The main difference between the AGM vs. GEL batteries is the material inside of them. AGM uses an absorbed glass mat and battery acid, while GEL batteries use a silica-type gel. The AGM is better used for a high burst of AMPs, while GEL is better for slow discharge. Don't know if this helps.

How do I know if my battery is AGM or calcium?

Basically, an AGM battery will always have a flat top, and only the negative and positive terminals of the battery will be sticking out. On the other hand, the liquid acid batteries have a removable top which is not the case with AGM batteries as they are properly sealed.

How to identify battery cell type?

Alkaline batteries are identified by the words “Alkaline” or the letters “ALK”  All types of Alkaline batteries can be stored in the same storage container  The terminal on AAA, AA, C, and D-cell batteries are not required to be taped .
