Other signs
  • Burning smell: Corrosion or a poor connection inside the relay can generate significant heat, leading to a burnt electrical odor. In severe cases, the plastic housing of the relay may even melt. 
  • Stuck starter: In a less common failure mode, the relay's contacts can get stuck, causing the starter to remain engaged after the engine has started. This can create a grinding noise and damage the starter and flywheel.

What happens when the ECM relay goes bad?
