What engine is in the Toyota MR2?

There's no single MR2 engine. Across its generations: AW11 used a 1.6L 4A-GE; SW20 offered a turbocharged 2.0L 3S-GTE or a naturally aspirated 2.0L 3S-GE; and the MR2 Spyder used a 1.8L inline-4 (typically 1ZZ-FE) in most markets.

Engine lineup by generation

First generation AW11 (1984–1989)

The early MR2 paired a compact, high-revving four-cylinder with light weight and balanced handling. It used:

  • 1.6 L inline-4 4A-GE (16-valve DOHC)

In summary, the AW11's engine emphasized rev-happy performance and simplicity, setting the template for a mid-engine sports car that prioritized chassis feel over brute power.

Second generation SW20 (1990–1999)

The second-generation MR2 expanded powerplant options to suit different markets and preferences. It offered two main engine configurations:

  • 2.0 L turbocharged 3S-GTE (intercooled)

  • 2.0 L naturally aspirated 3S-GE

The turbo model delivered strong performance and acceleration, while the NA version focused on reliability and linear power delivery. The SW20 lineup helped cement the MR2's reputation as a true performance coupe with genuine torque and responsive handling.

MR2 Spyder / MR-S (2000–2005)

The third-generation MR2, marketed as the MR2 Spyder in many regions, moved to a lighter, simpler powertrain to match its wind-in-the-hair open-top focus. It used:

  • 1.8 L inline-4 1ZZ-FE (commonly used in this era of Toyota cars)

Power was modest by modern standards, but the Spyder aimed for agility and driver engagement through low weight and balanced dynamics rather than raw horsepower.

Summary

Across its lifespan, the Toyota MR2 offered a range of engines aligned with its evolving design goals: the AW11 traded compact, rev-happy performance; the SW20 offered turbocharged and naturally aspirated 2.0-liter power to broaden its appeal; and the MR2 Spyder prioritized lightness and handling with a compact 1.8-liter four. For enthusiasts, that diversity is part of the MR2's enduring appeal: a mid-engine layout paired with engines tuned for balance as much as sheer power.
