What is the symbol on the fog light button?

The symbol on the fog light button is a pictogram of a headlight with fog-related lines, used to indicate the fog lights can be turned on. The exact design varies by vehicle, but it always communicates fog conditions and the intended lighting function.

What the symbol indicates

Fog lights are low-mounted, wide-beam lamps designed to cut through fog, heavy rain, or snow by throwing light close to the road surface and reducing glare. The symbol on the switch and the dashboard indicator shows when the lights are active or available, and helps distinguish between front fog lights and rear fog lights.

Common designs you’ll see

Two main icon designs appear on most vehicles when you look at the fog light control. The following are the two you'll encounter most often and what each tells you about which lights are involved.

  • Front fog light: Icon typically depicts a headlamp with a downward-slanted beam and one or more short lines or a curved fog motif. In many European cars the icon includes a wavy line beneath the beam to symbolize fog.

  • Rear fog light: Similar headlamp symbol, but oriented to indicate the rear beam; the icon may be a mirrored version of the front symbol or include an extra marking. On many dashboards the indicator light is red when active.

In short, the key clue is the fog motif: a headlight with a fog-related line (often wavy). The icon may be mirrored for rear fog lights, and dash indicators can vary in color by market.

Regional differences and standards

Icon designs and color cues can differ by region and manufacturer. In Europe and many other markets, the front fog light indicator is commonly shown in blue on the instrument panel when active, while rear fog lights are typically indicated with a red light. In the United States and other regions, the same concepts are conveyed, but the exact glyph and color scheme on the switch and cluster can differ. Always consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual or the symbol legend on your specific model to be sure which icon corresponds to which lights.

How to use fog lights properly

Fog lights should be used only when visibility is genuinely reduced by fog, heavy rain, or snow. They cast a wide, low beam that helps you see the road surface without causing glare for oncoming drivers. Turn them off when visibility improves and use standard headlights as conditions permit. If your car supports an automatic fog light function, review the settings to ensure it activates appropriately.

Summary

The fog light button icon is a standardized pictogram depicting a headlamp with fog-related markings. The exact design can vary by vehicle, but the purpose remains the same: to indicate and control the fog lights. When in doubt about a particular symbol on your dashboard, refer to the owner’s manual for the precise meaning of your car’s icons.

What is the symbol for fog lights?

Fog light symbols show a lamp with a wavy line and beams, which indicate whether the front or rear fog lights are on. How to turn fog lights on or off?

Off and it's daytime. So when I put it to auto they're off right now when I turn the headlights.

Can I drive with fog lights on at night?

No, you cannot use fog lights as a replacement for headlights at night; you must use your low-beam headlights, and fog lights should only be used with your headlights in poor visibility conditions like fog, rain, or snow. Using fog lights alone is illegal and can be dangerous because they can blind other drivers, and they don't provide the proper beam pattern for general night driving.
Rules for fog light use

  • Use with headlights: Fog lights are designed to be used in conjunction with your regular low-beam headlights, not as a substitute.
  • Poor visibility only: They are intended to improve visibility in conditions like fog, heavy rain, or snow and should be turned off once visibility improves.
  • Legal requirements: Using them alone at night on a clear road is illegal in most places and can result in a ticket.
  • Blinding other drivers: Their low, wide beam can dazzle oncoming traffic and is not an appropriate substitute for the focused beam of headlights.

Why you need to use headlights
  • Required equipment: Headlights are mandatory equipment, and driving with them out is against the law.
  • Proper illumination: They are designed to provide the proper pattern of light to see the road ahead and the sides of the road.
  • Visibility to others: Headlights make your vehicle visible to other drivers, which is crucial at night.

What does a fog symbol look like?

These lights help improve visibility in poor weather like fog, heavy rain, or snow. The front fog light symbol is a green icon that looks like a headlamp with diagonal lines pointing left, crossed by a wavy line. It means your front fog lights are on, casting a wide, low beam to light up the road directly ahead.
