Which Honda models have VTEC?

Honda's Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) technology is a key feature found in many of the automaker's popular models. VTEC allows Honda engines to deliver a compelling balance of power, efficiency, and responsiveness across a wide range of engine speeds.

What is VTEC?

VTEC is an advanced variable valve timing system developed by Honda. It works by automatically switching between two different cam profiles, allowing the engine to optimize valve timing and lift for different driving conditions. At low and medium engine speeds, VTEC uses a more efficient cam profile for improved fuel economy. At higher engine speeds, it switches to a more aggressive cam profile that increases valve lift and duration, unlocking greater horsepower and torque.

Honda Models with VTEC

Many of Honda's most popular models feature VTEC technology, including:

  • Civic - Honda's iconic compact car has offered VTEC since the 1990s, with the technology found in both the base engine and available turbocharged variants.

  • Accord - Honda's midsize sedan has long utilized VTEC, with the technology featured in both four-cylinder and V6 engine options.

  • Pilot - Honda's three-row SUV uses VTEC to balance power and efficiency in its V6 engine.

  • Odyssey - Honda's popular minivan also benefits from VTEC technology in its V6 powertrain.

  • CR-V - Honda's compact crossover SUV utilizes VTEC in both its base four-cylinder and available turbocharged engine options.

VTEC has been a key part of Honda's engineering philosophy for decades, helping the automaker deliver engaging performance and impressive fuel economy across its diverse model lineup.

Why did Honda stop VTEC?

A sad day for vtec lovers So honda announced that will be discontinuing production in october of several vtec motorbikes due to new emissions laws in Japan. Just like the older vtec car engines were phased out by 2011-2012 its the end of an era for honda.

Is VTEC basically a turbo?

VTEC Turbo
The VTEC engine is a Honda original. This stands for “variable valve timing and lift electronic control.” The VTEC Turbo uses a turbocharger paired with a direct injection system and a variable valve timing mechanism. Together, these create a smooth power in both low and high revs.

What year did Honda use VTEC?

1989
Eventually the mechanism evolved into Honda's VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control System) engine. Launched via the 1989 Integra, this innovative technology surprised the world with a new level of performance from a compact, fuel-efficient engine.

Does the Civic 1.5 have VTEC?

The high-performance Civic Si is equipped with a 200 hp (SAE net @ 6,000 rpm) version of the engine (L15CA) that features the reshaped 11-blade turbine impeller design, 17.8 psi of boost, VTEC®, a 10.3:1 compression ratio, and significant power delivery improvements.
