Who makes the Chevy City Express van?

The Chevy City Express is a compact cargo van that was produced by Nissan, not General Motors (GM) which owns the Chevrolet brand. Despite the Chevrolet branding, the City Express was essentially a rebadged version of Nissan's NV200 van, which has been sold globally since 2009.

Nissan's Role in the Chevy City Express

In 2013, GM and Nissan entered into an agreement where Nissan would manufacture a small cargo van for Chevrolet to sell in the United States and Canada. The resulting vehicle was the Chevy City Express, which was produced at Nissan's manufacturing facility in Mexico from 2014 to 2018.

The City Express shared the same platform, powertrain, and many other components with Nissan's NV200 van. This allowed GM to quickly bring a small cargo van to market without having to invest in developing an entirely new vehicle from scratch.

Why Did Chevrolet Sell a Nissan-Made Van?

  • GM did not have a small cargo van offering in its lineup to compete with models like the Ford Transit Connect.

  • Partnering with Nissan allowed Chevrolet to enter the compact cargo van segment quickly and cost-effectively.

  • The City Express provided Chevrolet dealers with a van option for small business and commercial customers who needed a more maneuverable and fuel-efficient vehicle compared to full-size vans.

However, the City Express never gained significant sales traction, and Chevrolet discontinued the model after the 2018 model year. GM decided to focus its efforts on its larger, more profitable van models like the Chevrolet Express and Savana.
