Who manufactured Geo?

Geo was a brand of compact and subcompact cars produced by General Motors (GM) from 1989 to 1997. The Geo brand was created as a joint venture between GM and Japanese automaker Suzuki to offer more fuel-efficient and affordable vehicles to American consumers.

The Origins of Geo

In the late 1980s, GM recognized the growing demand for smaller, more fuel-efficient cars in the United States. To address this market, the company partnered with Suzuki, a Japanese automaker known for its expertise in compact and subcompact vehicle design. Together, they created the Geo brand, which would offer a range of vehicles based on Suzuki's existing models.

The Geo Lineup

The Geo brand consisted of several models, including:

  • Geo Metro: A subcompact hatchback and sedan based on the Suzuki Cultus.

  • Geo Prizm: A compact sedan based on the Toyota Corolla, produced as a joint venture between GM and Toyota.

  • Geo Tracker: A compact SUV based on the Suzuki Sidekick.

  • Geo Storm: A sporty compact hatchback based on the Isuzu Impulse.

These Geo models were designed to offer consumers a more affordable and fuel-efficient alternative to traditional American-made cars, while still providing the quality and reliability associated with the Suzuki and Toyota brands.

The End of the Geo Brand

Despite initial success, the Geo brand was ultimately discontinued in 1997 as GM sought to streamline its product lineup and focus on its core brands, such as Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac. The Geo models were either discontinued or absorbed into the Chevrolet lineup, with the Prizm becoming the Chevrolet Prizm and the Tracker becoming the Chevrolet Tracker.

While the Geo brand was short-lived, it played an important role in GM's efforts to adapt to changing consumer preferences and the growing demand for more fuel-efficient and affordable vehicles in the United States.
