How do I change the oil in my car myself?

What You’ll Need

  • New engine oil of the grade and quantity specified for your car (e.g., 5W-30, 0W-20; typical amounts range from about 4 to 6 quarts in many cars)

  • New oil filter compatible with your vehicle

  • Oil drain pan to catch used oil

  • Funnel for pouring oil

  • Socket wrench or ratchet and the appropriate size for your drain plug

  • Oil filter wrench (or strap wrench) if needed

  • Jack and jack stands or ramps to lift the car safely

  • Safety glasses and mechanic’s gloves

  • Rags, shop towels, and an absorbent mat for spills

  • Sealable container or bottle for transporting used oil

  • Torque wrench (to tighten the drain plug to the manufacturer’s spec)

  • Your vehicle’s owner's manual or service manual for reference

Prepare the Vehicle

  1. Warm the engine for 5–10 minutes to loosen oil, then turn off the engine and set the parking brake on level ground. If you’re using ramps, ensure they are stable and use wheel chocks on the rear wheels.

  2. Raise the front of the car with a jack and secure it on jack stands, or drive the car onto sturdy ramps.

  3. Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug and locate the oil filter. Have your new filter ready for quick replacement.

  4. Ensure you have good lighting and a clean working area; keep kids and pets away from the workspace.

Drain Old Oil and Replace the Filter

  1. Carefully remove the drain plug with the correct wrench. Let the oil drain completely into the pan; this may take several minutes. Do not use a bare hand to feel for the plug while oil is hot.

  2. Once drainage slows, reinstall or replace the drain plug with a new washer if your car uses one. Tighten to the manufacturer’s torque specification using a torque wrench.

  3. Using an oil filter wrench, loosen and remove the old oil filter. Expect some oil to spill from the filter opening; keep the drain pan underneath.

  4. Lightly oil the gasket on the new filter with fresh oil, then install the new filter by hand until snug. If the filter requires an additional 3/4 turn, do so as directed by the filter manufacturer.

  5. Wipe away spilled oil and inspect the drainage area for leaks after the drain plug is secured and the filter is installed.

Refill with Fresh Oil

  1. Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine and place a funnel in the opening. Pour in the recommended amount of new oil as specified in your manual. If you’re unsure, add a little at a time and check with the dipstick to avoid overfilling.

  2. Replace the fill cap and start the engine. Let it run for 1–2 minutes, then turn it off and wait a minute for the oil to settle.

  3. Check for visible leaks around the drain plug and the oil filter. If you see a leak, stop the engine and address the seal or gasket as needed before rechecking.

  4. Check the oil level with the dipstick. Add small amounts of oil if needed until the level reaches the proper range between the low and full marks.

Disposal and Cleanup

  1. Transport the used oil in a sealed, clean container to an authorized recycling or collection facility. Do not mix oil with other automotive fluids unless the facility accepts them together.

  2. Dispose of the old oil filter according to local regulations, often at the same facility that accepts used oil. Some places require placing the filter in a sealed bag or container.

  3. Clean the work area, wipe down the drain pan and tools, and store them properly for future use. When finished, lower the vehicle carefully from the stands or ramps.
