How do you read Honda messages?

In-car messages: reading the dashboard and MID

These steps cover how to read maintenance reminders and warning messages that appear directly on the car’s display.

What you will see on the dashboard

Most Hondas show critical alerts as warning lights and associated text on the instrument cluster or multi-information display (MID). Reading these text messages helps you understand the issue or service due without needing a phone.

  • Turn on the ignition and look at the instrument cluster or MID for warning icons (like oil, brakes, engine) and any accompanying text.

  • Use the steering wheel controls or a display knob to cycle through message screens until you see the full text (for example, oil life, tire-pressure alerts, or other system notices).

  • For the Maintenance Minder, navigate to the Maintenance/Service screen on the MID or infotainment display to view next service due dates and recommended intervals.

  • If a red warning light is on, consult the owner’s manual or contact a dealer promptly.

Phone-based messages: HondaLink and remote notifications

HondaLink provides remote alerts about your vehicle, including recalls, service reminders, and dealer communications. This section explains how to access those messages from your smartphone.

What HondaLink covers

The HondaLink app can push notices about maintenance, recalls, and upcoming appointments, and may display dealer messages you receive when linked to your car.

  • Install the HondaLink app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) and sign in with your Honda ID. Link your vehicle using your VIN as directed by the app.

  • Open HondaLink and go to Alerts or Messages to view dealer notices, recall information, and service reminders.

  • Enable push notifications within the app to receive real-time updates about your vehicle’s status or upcoming service.

  • Use the app to schedule service, contact your dealer, or check health reports when you’re not in the car.

In-car text and voice messages via CarPlay/Android Auto

When a compatible smartphone is connected via CarPlay (iPhone) or Android Auto, you can read and respond to text messages using the car’s display and voice controls.

Reading and replying safely

CarPlay and Android Auto mirror your phone’s messaging apps to the car display, with hands-free options through voice assistants. This makes it possible to stay connected while keeping your focus on driving.

  • Connect your iPhone with CarPlay or an Android phone with Android Auto; ensure you grant messaging access to CarPlay/Android Auto.

  • Open the Messages app (iOS) or your preferred messaging app on the CarPlay/Android Auto interface to view new messages on the car screen.

  • Activate voice input to read messages aloud and to compose replies (for example, “Hey Siri, read my messages” or using the car’s voice button).

  • Be mindful of privacy and safety; avoid displaying sensitive content when others are in the car, and use quick replies or dictation rather than typing.

Reading diagnostic codes: using an OBD-II scanner

For deeper diagnostics beyond the dashboard messages, an OBD-II scanner can read diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that indicate mechanical or sensor issues. This is optional and should be used with caution.

What you’ll need

To read DTCs, you’ll typically need an OBD-II scanner or a Bluetooth-enabled adapter connected to a smartphone app that supports Honda codes.

  • Plug the OBD-II scanner into the vehicle’s OBD-II port (usually located under the dash on the driver’s side).

  • Turn on the ignition to power the vehicle’s electronics, then connect the scanner or Bluetooth adapter to your phone or tablet.

  • Use the scanner/app to read DTCs and look up the codes in the device’s library or online to understand the issue (e.g., P0300 misfire, P0420 catalyst efficiency).

  • Only clear codes after performing necessary repairs; if the check engine light returns, consult a technician.
