Is a Toyota Camry an automatic?

Yes. In today’s lineup the Camry uses automatic transmissions, with an 8-speed automatic (8AT) on the gasoline models and an electronically controlled CVT (eCVT) on the hybrids. There is no manual transmission option on new Camry models.

Current transmission options

The following describes the two main configurations you’ll encounter on contemporary Camry variants.

Gasoline Camry

  • Transmission: 8-speed automatic (8AT).

The gasoline Camry relies on the 8-speed automatic for smooth, consistent shifts and broad usability in everyday driving.

Camry Hybrid

  • Transmission: eCVT (electronically controlled CVT).

The hybrid version uses an eCVT to optimize efficiency across various driving conditions, often delivering smoother acceleration with fewer noticeable “steps” between gears.

Historical notes on manual transmissions

Historically, some older Camry generations offered manual transmissions in certain overseas markets. In the United States and most major markets today, Toyota has not offered a manual Camry for new models in recent decades, with automatics becoming the standard for the model.

Summary

Modern Toyota Camrys are automatic only. Gasoline variants use an 8-speed automatic, while hybrids use an eCVT; there is no manual option on current Camry models. If you specifically want a manual transmission from Toyota, you would need to look at older Camry generations or other Toyota models that offered manuals in the past.
