Which Subaru models have turbo?

Turbocharged Subarus in current production are the WRX, Ascent, and Outback XT; the high-performance WRX STI has been discontinued, and most other Subaru models do not offer turbo power in their current configurations.

Subaru’s use of turbocharging has varied by model and generation. This article outlines which models currently offer a turbo engine, and provides context on historical turbo variants that are no longer part of the lineup.

Current turbo-equipped models

Subaru currently deploys turbocharging on three main models. Each uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four engine, delivering stronger performance while preserving all-wheel drive.

  • WRX — turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four; typically around 270 horsepower with standard AWD; sport-focused sedan.

  • Ascent — 2.4-liter turbo flat-four; about 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque; three-row family SUV with AWD.

  • Outback — available with a 2.4-liter turbo in the XT trims; base Outback uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine.

For most buyers, the WRX represents the purest turbo-charged Subaru experience, while the Ascent and Outback XT offer boosted power in larger, more practical body styles.

Historical turbo models (context)

Subaru has offered turbocharged variants in earlier generations that are not part of the current U.S. lineup. Notable examples include Forester XT and Crosstrek XV, both featuring turbocharged 2.0-liter engines, and the WRX STI, a high-performance variant that has been discontinued in recent years.

  • Forester XT — turbocharged 2.0-liter engine in previous generations; not offered in today's Forester lineup in the U.S.

  • Crosstrek XV — turbocharged 2.0-liter engine in earlier generations; current Crosstrek does not offer a turbo version.

  • WRX STI — high-performance turbo model; production has ended and is not part of the current lineup.

These examples illustrate Subaru’s long history with turbo technology, even as the contemporary lineup narrows turbo options to three main models.

Summary

Today’s turbocharged Subarus are concentrated in the WRX, Ascent, and Outback XT. The WRX STI is no longer in production, and most other models in Subaru’s current lineup use naturally aspirated engines. If you want turbo power from Subaru, these three models are the primary options, with the WRX offering the sportiest experience and the Ascent/Outback XT providing boosted performance in larger, family-oriented vehicles.
