Does Ford still make the freestyle?
The short answer is no: Ford does not currently manufacture a model named the Freestyle. The Freestyle name has appeared in different markets at different times, but as of 2025 there is no new Ford Freestyle in Ford’s global lineup. This article explains the two main regional histories of the Freestyle and where they stand today.
Two regional histories of the Freestyle name
Ford used the Freestyle name for separate vehicles in the United States and in India. Each market followed a distinct lifecycle, culminating in the discontinuation of the model in both regions.
United States: Freestyle (2005–2009) and Taurus X
In the U.S., Ford introduced the Freestyle in 2005 as a seven-passenger crossover built on the platform of the Ford Five Hundred. For the 2008 model year, Ford rebranded the model as the Taurus X, continuing sales through 2009 before the line was discontinued. The Freestyle name never returned to Ford’s U.S. lineup after Taurus X ended.
Key milestones in the U.S. Freestyle lineage:
- 2005: Introduction of the Freestyle in the U.S. market.
- 2008: Rebranded as Taurus X for the 2008 model year.
- 2009: End of Taurus X production; the Freestyle name is retired in the U.S.
Current status: Ford does not produce the Freestyle in the United States today.
India: Ford Freestyle (launched 2018) and post-exit status
In India, Ford launched the Freestyle in 2018 as a compact crossover based on the Figo hatchback, featuring increased ground clearance and rugged styling for market-specific demand. The model remained part of Ford India’s lineup during a challenging period for the brand, but Ford announced a wind-down of local manufacturing and exited the Indian market in 2021–2022. Production of the Freestyle ceased as Ford stopped manufacturing in the country, and there have been no plans announced to reintroduce the model under Ford’s banner in India.
Key milestones in India:
- 2018: Ford India launches the Freestyle, a crossover hatch based on the Figo platform.
- 2021–2022: Ford announces wind-down of Indian manufacturing and exits the market.
- 2022–2023: Manufacturing ceases; the Freestyle is no longer sold as a new model in India.
Current status: No new Freestyle is produced or marketed by Ford in India or elsewhere as of 2025.
Current status and future prospects
There are no announced plans to revive the Freestyle name globally. The two regional histories illustrate Ford’s shifting market strategy over the past decade and a half. If Ford were to reintroduce a Freestyle-branded vehicle in the future, it would come through official Ford announcements and be widely covered by automotive media.
Summary
Ford does not currently offer a Freestyle. In the United States, the Freestyle existed from 2005 to 2009 and was renamed Taurus X in 2008 before being discontinued. In India, the Freestyle appeared in 2018 but was discontinued after Ford exited the Indian market in 2021–2022. As of 2025, the Freestyle name is not part of Ford’s active lineup anywhere in the world.
