How do I know what rims are on my car?

Knowing the exact rims on your car is important for a variety of reasons, such as purchasing new tires, upgrading your wheels, or simply understanding the specifications of your vehicle. Fortunately, there are several ways to determine the rims on your car.

Check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

The VIN, a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle, contains information about your car's make, model, and even the factory-installed rims. You can typically find the VIN on the driver's side dashboard, the driver's side door jamb, or in your vehicle's documentation. Once you have the VIN, you can use online VIN decoders or contact your car's manufacturer to determine the rim size and specifications.

Inspect the Rims Directly

Another way to identify your car's rims is to physically inspect them. Look for any markings or engravings on the rims that may indicate the size, material, or other details. You can also measure the diameter and width of the rims to get a more precise idea of their specifications.

Check the Owner's Manual

Your car's owner's manual is a valuable resource for information about your vehicle, including the factory-installed rims. The manual may list the exact rim size, as well as any other details about the wheels.

Consult Online Resources

If you don't have access to your VIN or owner's manual, you can search online for information about your car's make, model, and year to find the factory-installed rim specifications. Many automotive websites and forums provide this information, which can help you identify the rims on your car.

Tips for Identifying Rims

  • Measure the Diameter: The diameter of the rim is typically measured in inches, such as 16-inch or 18-inch rims.

  • Check the Width: The width of the rim is also an important factor, usually measured in inches as well.

  • Identify the Material: Rims can be made of various materials, such as steel, aluminum, or alloy, which can affect their appearance and performance.

  • Look for Markings: Manufacturers often include identifying information, such as the size or model, directly on the rims.

By following these steps, you can easily determine the rims on your car and ensure that any future modifications or replacements are compatible with your vehicle.

Do rims have markings on them?

How to tell rim size without a tire?

If you don't have the tire mounted, the easiest way to measure the width of the rim is from bead seat to bead seat—not the full outer lip-to-lip measurement. You'll need a measuring tape or calipers and measure from the inside edge where the tire bead sits across to the opposite side.
